I just switched Jazz to Nutro from Chicken Soup... She is not an aggressive eater and I am trying to find something she likes that is still good quality. She tends to Poo quite a bit on this food which makes me think it may not be a good quality food. I am thinking about Natural Balance for the try if this don't work work out. Jazz is 5 months, 35ish pounds. I just want to make sure she is getting the proper nutrition she needs for a growing puppy. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I have a 7 month old who eats Nutro Chicken, Roce and Oatmeal and loves it...of course we also call him hoover since he pretty much loves everything. However, when I gave him a some choices in food he went to the Nutro first.

While I was switching him over he didn't poop a lot but the first week I had him on all Nutro he went the bathroom lots but since than he has settled down.

Good luck-

I switched Lael to Wellness puppy formula at about 3 mon of age, and have seen dramatic results. Less eye boogies, almost ZERO gas :), shiny & soft coat, healthy stools, and she loves it! Click here for the Ingredients of Wellness Super5Mix Puppy. And here's an overview about Wellness. And another link to find a store near you. :D

I have never fed Natural Balance, but I do cut up their the semi-moist Lamb formula (comes in a "sausage"-looking wrapping) for training treats, and Lael loves that too.

If you have troubles with Natural Balance, I'd reccommend trying Wellness out. Like I said, it has been great for Lael.

I have a post over on the feeding section but was checking this section out and noticed that Lael who feeds Wellness said she has less eye boogies with her boxer. My 5 month old female was on Purina Pro Plan from the breeder, but I switched her about a month ago to Nutro for Large Breed Puppies. Ever since I've done that (which took 2 weeks of gradually mixing foods) she has had bad gas and TONS of eye boogies. The only benefit I've seen so far is less poop. I was thinking of switching her to another kind but still in the Nutro line but if Wellness decreases gas and eye boogies, I think I might try that instead. There's so much good information on this site that I'm having a hard time of which food to switch her to next. My choices that I think I have narrowed it down to are: Nutro Natural Choice Ultra Puppy, Canidae or Wellness. Does anyone out there have further advice to help me make up my mind?

I made up my mind and went with Natural Balance, still in the mixing stage and have already noticed a difference. Her stool is a lot firmer and not as frequent. She seems to like it pretty well too. Looks like we got a winner, the price is not too bad either, about a dollar a pound. With all the choices out there it is hard to make up your mind. It would be nice to see a section here in Boxer World where members could rate the different foods so you can see at a glance what brand is most popular by members. Thanks for everyone's replies. Good Luck

Puppy diet and eye boogie's

Gracie is 4.5 months old, pushing 30 lbs. Vet had me put her on Science Diet Large Breed Puppy. She has had 2 episodes of violent diarhea. (over 2 month period) Vet put her on flagll and a teaspoon of plain yogurt per day. Diarhea has not recurred thank goodness. But what is the relationship to diet and eye boogies..Gracie has them every morning..

Jack,

Lael will also have a small eye boogie or two first thing in the morning, and that's it. Before Wellness, she would have boogies in her eyes all day long. I don't know a direct relationship between food & eye boogies other than in Laels case: better food, less boogies! :)

On a side note, Boxers are not a large breed dog, and to my knowledge it is NOT beneficial to feed them large breed food. I would suggest reconsidering the food you are feeding. There are many opinions on this, and you may want to do a search to find out more.

Hope that helps,

JackC -

From what I've read (on this board and elsewhere), Science Diet is not a high quality food (despite being recommended by the vet) and that alone may account for the diarrhea. I would try putting her on a better quality food like Wellness, Natural Balance or Canidae (to name a few).

Just a thought. Good luck.

Jag eats Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy

Our Jag is eating the Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Formula and has been since he was about 6.5 weeks old. He is now 10 weeks old today and weighs exactly 17 lbs. He is eating 1 cup of dry food 3 times a day mixed with one tablespoon of Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Puppy canned food with each serving. In the morning I add 1 tablespoon plain yogurt (he has less gas with this) and I alternate either a scrambled egg or cottage cheese or some cut up cooked chicken to his supper serving each day.

He also loves peanut butter which we use to have him be still while changing the tape on his ears (works like magic) appicon. And of course we can't forget the treats. He has a few favourites but his all time favourite is Milk Bones in the assorted flavours. I hide them in his crate at night so when he goes to sleep he finds them. I think this has helped with him enjoying going to bed at night because when I say its bedtime he runs over to where the MilkBones are and sits and stares and then runs to his bed. Too cute!!

Everyone thinks we spoil him too much but he is so adorable we can't help it. We just came home from Petsmart a while ago, he was such a well behaved boy and as usual he now has added a couple of new toys among other doggy stuff to his already extensive collection.

We just love him too much!! LOL :)

I just recently switched katie from Iams Large breed (vet recommended large breed b/c of her hip prob) to Nutro Natural Choice. I also tried the Natural Balance. Since both cost about the same. I found, with Katie, that the Nutro did better for her coat than the NB. Katie has always had a little dry patch of hair on her back btwn the shoulder blades, on Nutro it went away, on NB it was back. Personally, i think it is an individual thing, what might work for one dog may not for the other. Good Luck!
