Thinking of finding a new vet

I had posted a few weeks ago that my vet gave me some ACE to give Joey so I could trim his nails. I read up on that drug here and everywhere I could think of online. So....I go back to the vet this past week, bottle in hand, wanting a credit for them. I tell him how the vet handbook specifically says it's not recommended, etc. The receptionist was nice enough but when the vet came up to talk to me, he wasn't. He seemed VERY defensive. Said that receptionist had boxers and he operates on other boxers while useing it. That he's NEVER heard anything about it and I can't believe anything I read online. He is NOT intererested in my bringing him/showing any the information I found. There was something about the way he was so defensive that I just wasn't comfortable about. Also, when I got those pills, it was a day that I had my cat there. I was waiting on her leukemia tests result to come back and as I sat in the room, I actually had to wipe dog/cat hair from the bench to sit down (aren't they supposed to wipe down between pets?). There was noticible dirt/streaks about two feet up the wall and in general, I didn't feel too clean sitting there. Doesn't all of this sound like a reason to find someone else?

I would not go anywhere that I don't feel comfortable. You are the "customer" and do not have to pay for services from someone who is not interested in your opinions. Good luck finding a new vet.

That is all so true. I will be going back to use my $8 credit towards Joey's frontline or interceptor and then, I will be done with them. I couldn't believe how uninterested he was in what I was saying. He was practically cutting me off and finally said he would call this anestisiologist (sp?) friend of his and see what he said about it but he was still standing firm that it was insane.

When I called my vet and asked the same thing about Ace with boxers, the receptionist assured me that they use Ace on all their patients even boxers and never had a problem. needless to say I mentioned it to the vet and he said he never uses it on any boxer in his office, although from what he knows it is all linked back to boxers from a certain origin. Similar situation as you had, just different ppl not knowing what they're talking about. However, if you're not 100% happy there, then go somewhere else, there are tons of vets out there. Our babies should be their #1 priority, we trust them with our pups lives afterall. Good Luck in your search.

I went against my instinct with a vet and it ended up costing me the life of my 13 week old puppy. I have had a very hard time forgiving myself for it. Please don't make the same mistake. If it doesnt feel right, it isnt. Find a new vet.

Find a new vet for sure. I feel like the vet should listen to your wishes with your pets, just as your own doc should listen to your wishes for your own care. Before I got Cisco neutered I took in a paper off the net that explained why ACE should not be used on boxers. I had them put it in Cisco's file. The receptionist then wrote in big red letters "NO ACE FOR CISCO" right by his name so it is the first thing you see when his file is opened. I did'nt even ask her to do that. Did I mention I love my vet and his receptionist?

Then at least maybe someone else who isnt as knowledgable as you are may be saved from making a horrible mistake.
