I'm happy that Brinde is settling in with only a few minor issues. The cats might be a new thing to her, so maybe she's a bit scared of them. It would be so nice if they could speak to us and be able to say what's going through their heads. I'm sure with some time and lots of love, she'll reach a good level of comfort and be more okay with people coming and going. She is probably still not sure who's who and what's what. I am so glad that there are great people like you in this world who are willing (and excited) to adopt an older dog. I'm sure, before you know it, she will be completely comfortable with her new wonderful home! I look forward to seeing her pics!

I think I know why its not posting now, after reading rules-Rich has had a # in the title-we will try tomorrow to show you Brinde- We are going to see Mary Chapin Carpenter tonite! Brinde loves to go for her walks and is seeming to get more used to Hershey who is very persistant in making his presence known-another words, he WILL be friends with her soon. Hershey used to sleep with Sophie, he likes dogs better than our other 2 cats.

YEH!!! Finally got pictures on of Brinde ( I say Brinde, my husband posts Brindi??) She is prettier in person and also that was day one now almost 2 weeks later, she is filling out and doing the boxer wiggle. She is a sweetie but sometimes looks nervous and that makes me nervous. She still goes crazy when someone approaches the house, almost like she doesn't see well plus she has growled at my daughters boyfriend who was playing with her like he used to play with Sophie. I'm so afraid she is going to bite someone when she gets this weird look. Ideas? Check her out!

Aww shes such a pretty girl. Im so glad you got her :)

As for the issues, just give her time before you start to rough play and get too hectic around her. She will still be adjusting to you and the cats. Dont expect it over night, it will take a few months.

As for the barking at the door, dont worry too much if she stops when she sees someone, its only if she keeps going that you should take a bit more notice.
My Lily is perfect in the house now, but when someone comes to the door she shakes and looks so scared. I think she gets so used to just the family that anyone new just freaks her out.

Just be patient! Its hard when you just want them to be happy all the time, but it will come :D

Brinde IS now doing the crab walk when I come home from work-there really is nothing to compare to seeing your dog walking towards you like she is doublejointed! She is like a pretzel! She is such a good girl, I left her loose today all day while we were all at work and came home to a happy girl, no accidents!! I need to get new pics for all to see-she is transforming into a younger looking lady. She has put on weight and her coat is nice and shiny.
This is so corny (corny?), I told my husband it is so nice having a boxer to come home to but I still get this lump in my throat when I think of Sophie, I kinda thought it would be easier having another dog and all but what I know now is even tho we are sharing space with Brinde she will never take Sophie,s place. Know what I mean? Cindy

Miss Brinde is a beautiful girl! It sounds like she definitely knows who her Mommy is!! I don't think you can ever replace the babies you've lost-just that your new babies are gifts from those who have gone to the bridge. Be sure to keep us updated on your new pretty girl!

What a beautiful girl!!!

And what a wonderful thing you did, I think your babie Sophie is looking down, so proud of her Mom and Dad for doing such a wonderful, wonderful ,thing for that poor sweet baby. Thank God for people like you!!! I know when we adopted Maya only about 2 weeks after Dylan died, I felt so guilty, but, I had to take her. I know Dylan would have wanted us to, and as you said, never, ever to replace, just to love and love which is what they all deserve.

Sadness turns to Gladness!!!

Hi There, Haven't had a chance to read through all of the e-mails on Boxerworld lately but was intrigued by your story of Sophie.

It sounds as if you have made the right decision to move on with sharing your home and love with a new Boxer mate! Although it is incredibly difficult to deal with the loss of a beloved family member, our pet, I truly believe we should look back at our time with our pets as a gift to one another. You gave the gift of a home and love to your Boxer, Sophie, and she gave you the gift of friendship and loyalty that was uniquely yours to share and remember! Isn't that wonderful! And now, your new Boxer baby came into your life to share a new experience, no matter what timeframe it is.

Our boxer, Amiga, 6 years old, was suddenly diagnosed with lymphoma November 2004. It was a very dark and sad time for us...we love our Boxer
angel. My husband found a lump in her throat one day...as he was giving her her daily "massage" :) We immediately took action with a one-time treatment of chemo-therapy, then followed up with large quantities of prednisone. From November through March we watched her bloat and deal with unquenchable thirst and insatiable hunger. This spring, we decided to begin lessening the doses of prednisone. During a check-up in May, we were told she may be in remission. We have since stopped the prednisone and have seen her return to a somewhat normal status, although she is not her usual self. Her playtime (especially during the treatments of prednisone) is limited and her beautiful snout and eyebrows have turned gray. I am curious what you experienced with Sophie. I know each dog is different, just like a human being, and I'm wondering if her calm attitiude and much-reduced appetite may be just a sign of her aging plus putting up with so much the past 6 months, or maybe I'm just not getting what to do next. We want to do the right thing for our Amiga and make sure she has the quality of life she deserves as we love her incredibly. Anything you can share with me about Sophie would be met gratefully.

Bless your heart for your humanity and kindness to your new Boxer baby.

Good luck with Amiga, sounds like she is doing well so enjoy her. I have regrets daily with what happened with Sophie so I don't have any answers unfortunately. Sophie started vomiting in Nov 2004, mainly bile tho she was eating well. I took her to the vet with concerns about that initially. On exam they noted her lymph nodes in her abdomen, groin area were enlarged and she was very tender in that area. Sophie actually cried out on exam, so they suggested an xray and labwork. Xrays only showed a small liver otherwise normal, so they said probably gastritis. She was put on Famotidine (pepcid)
switched food to Hills i/d and prednisone. she began losing weight, we were back and forth to our vet with no good answers. (usually gain with prednisone) Now they put her on omeprazole, amoxicillin, kept her overnite and did barium studies, she had a large lesion in her bladder and also a large lesion in her vulva. By now we are into January, she had been such a happy, playful dog, always wagging her whole body and now she had to be begged to go for a walk, she used to dance when the word "walk" was spelled out. Needless to say, we were all sick by now not knowing what was going on. We got the referral to
the critical care vet, still thinking this is going to turn around, after more labwork, overnite stay, IVs, an ultrasound and an exam under anesthesia,
she had 2 large lymph nodes around the bladder and a large mass in her perineum between her vagina and rectum and yes we had noticed she wasn't urinating much or it seemed to take her forever but we thought it was related to the vomiting and dehyration. They aspirated her lymph nodes and results came back lymphoma. We were told then that from the exam they felt the mass was unresectable and she was not able to pass stool and was in alot of discomfort when trying to urinate. She lost 14 lbs in 3 weeks. It was and still very hard to talk about but at this point we did not know what else to do, so we had Sophie put down on Feb 3, 2005. My husband, daughter and I were with her when the vet gave her the injection, she seemed to fall asleep in my arms. The vet was wonderful, she continued to sit with her when we left. This was probably the hardest thing we have ever had to do, but Sophie was not herself and suffering. Our son was away at college and did not get to say goodbye, that was also difficult. I don't know if anything more could have been done, I guess we have to trust those who know more-the vet and I thought she was wonderful and so caring with Sophie. Sorry this is so long and I don't know if it helps but good luck with your baby, and relish every moment. Cindy
