I LOVE this thread!

I swore Marshall would be crate trained. Ther was NO WAY I was dealing with the peeing, pooping and general detroying of the house. Guess what went out night #1... yup...crate training. He went into the crate, no problem but about an hour later started crying and whining. DH said it was mean and I should go get him. So I did and the rest is history. In my defense, Marshall is an amazingly well behaved puppy and other than a couple accidents when left inside alone too long, he has done relatively little damage to the house and he sleeps happily all night with the kids.

Zoe has wallowed all over the furniture since Day 1. I'm working with Marshall on only being allowed up when invited. Of course, when I walk into the living room and see the squishy little face sleeping soundly on the couch I can't hardly disturb him. So that one's probably out as well.

The one rule that I've implemented and we've done great with is not feeding from the table and no human food scraps (except things I know aren't bad for them like yogurt, chicken, tuna, etc.). Having pups with sensitive stomachs makes this rule easier to follow. And I can't stand a beggar, so our pups aren't allowed in the dining room when we're eating. They know the rule and lay in the living room staring longingly at us while we have dinner.

One thing I'm working on is trying to get Jake to understand that we get to sleep late on the weekends. If he sleeps in, I know he's not feeling good because he generally wants his breakfast at 5 a.m. every morning.

please do tell when you figure out how to do this!

I love this post. It has been awesome reading all of them. We had rules some my rules some my husbands rules.

#1 No feeding from the table. lasted about 1 year but she waits patiently out of the dining room until we call her to us.

#2 No eating out of any bowl/plate that we eat out of. This has stuck. Don't want her thinking this is her food when we set it down on the coffee table.

#3 Not allowed on bed without permission and never at night. (husbands rules) he broke this one immedietly it was so funny because he was hardcore no dog on bed...hehehe

#4 Not allowed on couch ever for no reason (Husband rules again) guess who is allowed on the couch as long as she is on her blanket this one took about 2 years to break....Again husband changed.

#5 No dressing up the dog. (husband rule). again broke first winter when she was shaking like a leaf from cold and he felt bad so we got her a sweater. He has looked for more things for her, even giving her one of his shirts to wear.

we also were never going to spoil our animals with special blankets, pillows and such. hahaha well we had to buy a special blanket so i could have mine back because she wouldn't sleep on anything else by my blanket and it had to be a specific color. I know dogs are color blind but we tried a different color blanket that was the same type and she refused to sleep on it. would completely remove it from her sleeping area so off we went to get her a blanket that was the same type and color as mine. and she has several throw pillows that are hers alone. and yes she uses all of them. can you say "SPOILED"

Well one of the rules was, Bowser couldn't sleep with us. But we broke that early--well, I did. When he was only a few months old, one of us would sleep on the couch next to the crate; so after I took him for his 2 am potty I didn't have the heart to make him go back in the crate so he slept with me on the couch.

Then I didn't want him on the bed because the cat sleeps with me, and kitty doesn't like Bowser one bit. But sadly for kitty that gets broken occasionally. :)

No dogs in the bed - didn't even last the first night. We were out late LATE and felt bad so what was the harm in a little snuggle time at 3am? In the bed ever since.

No table food - done very well with this one. He loves fruits and veggies so he can have them but not off of our plates only in his food dish or a separate plate that is not one of ours. He can also have some chicken and beef. The only "bad" thing he gets is spray whipped cream. I swear he can hear that can from a MILE away....

I won't even get into the "new" house rules. They didn't stand a chance.....

My parents creatures (2 dogs and 2 cats) will come running from wherever they are when the whipped cream can comes out. They had to replace a screen door when their bernese mountain dog crashed thru it to get back inside to get her treat. Yummy stuff.

When we got Shadow we didn't want him sleeping in the bed with us. Boyfriend is a hogger of the bed, and I know how Boxers are. But then after a long hard day of getting ready to move, Shadow was sound asleep in our bed, and I went with him. Ever since puppy sleeps with us.

We don't let him speak for things he wants. I don't want him to learn barking with get him what he wants.

No scraps.

No sitting on my lap while driving. He's learned very well.

Our rules for Mizzy are:

Not in the bed. This has stuck. She is allowed to sit on the bed with us if we are just hanging out in the room, but no sleeping and never at night

not on the couch. This one only took about 2 days. she has already learned that she comes up when called and no other times. But trust me, she takes full advantage of the times she gets that invite. Never knew a 4 month old puppy could take up so much space. :)

No people food. This has been easy and I think it will stick. I have seen some really well behaved dogs get sidetracked my getting table scraps and being feed at the table. So people have a great system that works for them. BUt I think we are better off always saying no. our 4 year-old already loves giving treats, dont need to add food to that list. ;)

Other than that she has free roam of the house and yard. She is a pretty good girl....as long as she gets that 5:30 a.m. walk :)
