Well, I just happened to look at the labels on the three Honest Kitchen products I have and even though they do have the dehydrated meat products included there is a still a note that says to add extra meat (?).

The note recommends adding raw or cooked meat in a ratio of nearly one cup of HK to one cup of meat.

So, I guess I'm right back to thinking that the Happydog product is considerably cheaper...fortunately, Ozzie likes them both!!

The Honest Kitchen foods were developed as a supplement to a raw diet (greatly simplified, they would replace the veggie portion of a raw diet); however, they can be fed exclusively and as such meet the AAFCO standards for a "100% complete and balanced" food.

I have used The Honest Kitchen's Force previously (grain free). I just tried their newest grain free, Embark. Unfortunately, both have potato/sweet potato in them which doesn't work for my allergy boy. I just give it to my other 3. All 4 have loved both foods.

I am really considering taking my guys off of Solid Gold Wolf King (Bison and Salmon)and moving into The Honest Kitchen. Just to clarify, even though is "says" that it meets all the standards, would you all feel comfortable feeding just Honest Kitchen? I am not looking to transition into BARF, I am just looking into healthier alternatives to kibble. My boy, George, had a cancerous tumor so I'm very concerned/obsessed about how his diet affects his long-term health (a good friend of mine said that I had him on every kind of supplement except Concepta-Bitch, and that probably because they were out of it). How long does a bucket usually last? Does it go bad or because it's dehydrated, it'll last forever?

If I had a fantastic-in-every-other-aspect puppy home that just, for whatever reason, could not feed raw, I would accept them feeding exclusively Honest Kitchen foods. Of course, I would encourage them to add fresh food to it, and to give raw a chance , but I certainly would have less qualms about the HK foods than about a kibble.

A rehydrated big bucket supposedly is equal to 43lb of dry kibble. Kabu has now finished her first bucket (Embark). She truly does love it. I can't really compare her to how she would've been without it, but she looks the picture of health. Great coat. She does stool 3-4 times a day, but it is well formed and dries up quickly enough that I don't need to remove it from the yard. Hard to find it after 3-4 days. Funny watching the sesame seeds come back out. We add dry kibble to it once a day, for no real reason except to add variety and to get rid of the supply we still have left. I do occasionally add raw to it, e.g., chicken bones, but generally do not.

I'm still thinking about it. It sounds kind of pricey though. I think I saw it at $70 USD for a 10lb bucket. Is that about right? And a 10 lb bucket makes about 44lb of rehydrated food? That's like almost twice what I pay for Solid Gold. I'm also investigating a new food by Innova called Evo. I'm going to start a new thread on that.

Now, after using Embark from the Honest Kitchen, here's a comment and question. Kabu loves the stuff. She snarfs it down in no time. We're feeding her a cup three times a day. She seems to be growing fine, is muscular, and has a beautiful brindle coat. But she poops a lot. She will have 5 or 6 normal-looking poops a day. Makes it hard to finish off the housetraining. The stools are soft but well-formed, dark in color, and full a seeds and residue from the food. They dry up and disappear from the yards in a matter or 3-4 days. Any comment on the frequency of her stools? Thanks.

I think it's because there are no bones in the food. When I feed Force for a few days, Rocky's stool amount increases and he goes more often. I think it's just related to how the food is digested.

Sorry to dig up this thread again, but I had a question since my local pet store started to carry Honest Kitchen products recently.

What would everybody say about feeding, say, turkey necks for one meal, and HK for the other? Would I still need to add ground meat?

I am STILL looking for some alternatives to the overwhelmingly high prices of muscle meat here in CA. I could get turkey necks no problem (I think), but would feeding HK for the second meal of the day be enough in the "meat" department?
