Thanks for pulling up this old thread! :) I really need to read my WDJ magazines better (they recently talk about this). I wasn't aware of this stuff and it's great to use instead of kibble. I just ordered a bucket of it to mix with my homecooking.

Yes, thanks, Greg, for resurrecting this thread...

I picked up one of each of the Honest Kitchen varieties (Force, Verve, and Embark) but have used only the Force thus far for Ozzie. He seemed to like it, and as most have you have pointed out, it looks to be good stuff with good ingredients.

I believe Embark is the turkey-based variety that is also grain-free, if I recall correctly(?) That's the stuff that--after I went ahead and bought all three --I am going to let Ozzie try out next because it does seem to be the best match for him (he's 2 1/2 yrs. young...pretty much still a sizzling ball of energy).

There's another brand of this dehydrated-type food that I've purchased called Happydog; Ozzie has been getting that mixed in w/some kibble and raw meat and he likes that stuff, too. I think there are a few folks here at BW that feed their Boxers happydog from time-to-time...I also get the WDJ and did note the recent article about these dehydrated products; there are definitely several brands to choose from and I'd guess there are many more than are mentioned in that article.

By the way, Greg, that's a great name for your pup appicon

Thanks. I ordered a bucket. A general question. How much should a 10-11 week puppy weigh? Female. Kabu seems a little scrawny. She weighs 14.5. I'm hoping Embark helps this. We are curious about this as a first step towards BARFing too. I've only just begun to research this. How young is too young to add some meats like chicken wings and necks to the Embark?

Most raw fed pups are given chicken wings to gnaw on as soon as they have teeth. I Tara got her first chicken wings at her breeders around 4 weeks. The same for turkey necks.

You can start giving Kabu wings at any time.

Mmm-mmm-bark

Kabu had her first meal of Embark tonight. Loved it. Scarfed it down like it was a certified Black Angus filet. So taste isn't an issue. Looks like spinach-flavored oatmeal though.

So funny b/c Owen had his 1st Force meal last night. It did look like some sort of thick soup but he loved it! I mixed it with homecooking and I feel so much better giving him that vs. kibble. I'm still going to give him a little kibble for breakfast but I love that I have something else to give him at night so he's not always filled with kibble. I am SOOOO happy I saw this thread!

Sounds like all is well in the Honest Kitchen world.

I'd be curious to hear what you guys think about the HappyDog dehydrated stuff.....I've been giving it to Ozzie for a couple of months now and he seems to like it.

I think it is significantly cheaper than the Honest Kitchen and the consistency of it is much more like, say, rice, than the soupy texture of the HK. Then again, using a little less water would surely make the HK a little thicker.

I agree with you guys; these are good products!!

Bob.

If I'm reading their website correctly, the HappyDog food doesn't have any meat in it, you have to add your own? That explains the lower cost - the Honest Kitchen foods have meat. As for texture, you're correct in that adjusting the amount of water will make a difference. Also, letting the Honest Kitchen food sit for 10-15 minutes really thickens it up.

Ah-ha! I guess you're right, Julie. The absence of meat and the different packaging techniques certainly explains the price differences.

Thanks for posting the Honest Kitchen web site. I've been looking for something to use in lieu of the Hill's prescription i/d diet, and one of their reps told me to try Force and an enzyme supplement. A little concerned about the increased fat content, but am willing to try. In the interim, am keeping my fingers crossed. - Cathy
