Boxer Insane
Arabella and I just spent two long days driving from Kansas to Florida. We have made the trip quite a few times and never had any real problems. This trip, sigh, not so much.
Yesterday at the first rest area, I messed up as I didn't have a tight grip on Arabella's leash. She spotted another dog walking up behind us and took off. I yelled for her to stop which she did until the guy with the other dog took a step towards her just as I was trying to grab her leash. She then went up and sniffed the other dog, just like any other dog would do. The idiot quickly grabs his dog up by it's collar and harness and swings it around, so Arabella followed. Then the guy kicked Arabella! It took every bit of restraint I had, not tackle him and punch him in the face! I yell at him to stop just as his wife did. I grab Arabella and walk her away and check her over. Thankfully she wasn't hurt. It took me a long time to calm down enough to be able to drive.
Today after a few hours on the road I stopped to get gas. I locked the doors by instinct and ran inside to get a drink. I come outside and I can't find my keys. I look inside and they are in the ignition, and Arabella is in the backseat. After trying to break into my car with the help of others I finally call Roadside Assistance and they tell me they can have someone there in about an hour. I tell them my dog will be dead in an hour. They tell me that is the best they can do, if that isn't good enough, call 911 and have a cop break my window. I call 911 and the manager of the gas station called a local locksmith. The locksmith said he was on his way and it will be 15-20 minutes. Thankfully my car was in the shade, but it was still in the high 80's out. The cop showed up in about 5 minutes and we kept an eye on Arabella while waiting for the locksmith. She was panting but was alert and seemed fine, just wondering why I wasn't letting her out. As time passed (about 40 minutes from the time I went into the store), I noticed her gums were starting to get pale so I gave the go ahead for the cop to break my window. Poor Arabella was more traumatized by that, then by being locked in the car. She was frightened but OK. The rest of the trip was thankfully uneventful.
Tomorrow I will make a phone call or two and see about getting my window replaced and Arabella is spending the day with her grandma and getting spoiled rotten while my husband and I unload the moving truck. I am so glad that this move is almost over and I can actually pay attention to what I am doing and not get my baby girl in bad situations.
