The Boxer stare?

I was looking at a possible new doggie day care/boarding place yesterday. While talking with the owner, she informed me that most boxers don't pass her rigorous entrance interview (a day of play) for a variety of reasons, including bad doggy etiquette. She said boxers will stare at other dogs in the eyes, even though they mean it playfully, and the other dogs get offended and that's how dog fights start. I had never heard this before and she said it's in all the boxer books (but not any that I've read). So, I went home and told Shane and he said our boys don't stare at dogs in the dog park, but they do stare at each other right before they start the wild playing and running around that they love so much. Has anyone ever heard of this before? And, no, we won't be trying the boys out there...she also has a no-bark policy and no rough play policy. Ajax and Apollo would never survive!

I don't know about in CO, but I took my baby to a doggie daycare just so she can have fun, I am in Houston, TX and this doggie daycare have cameras so you can watch your baby play all day long, no matter where you are. So that made me feel secure. Anyway, she took the test, and she passed the test and entrance interview. The same day I took my baby to this daycare, another boxer was there too. So don't believe what they are saying to you!! :( I think is bad and mean what they are saying!!! Probably this is not a good place to take your baby, they probably don't like boxers and that's why they said that to you. So I would suggest you to take your babe to another place.

Good luck!

Um, wouldn't that be kind of difficult when you put dogs together? lol, my boy is so vocal he wouldn't survive there either! That lady is crazy, sounds like they'd be in detention or something

Rita and Munson do not go to daycare, but I called a few daycares near where my parents live in December and two were not accepting boxers for aggression issues?! These were great daycares with waiting lists. Interesting...

Mason used to go regularly to daycare, but goes with a dog walker full time now. However, we still walk past the daycare everyday and they always ask when he is coming back! They loved his energy and spirit and that he played constantly with the other dogs - they all had such a good time. I too could watch him on 'doggie cam' all day and there were often two or three other boxers and all of them would be having fun. Isn't that the point of daycare?

No barking or rough playing - she should have cats then not dogs!!

I have read about this, but it isn't necessarily boxers, it can be any breed. They just step over the line of normal dog etiquette and it can cause a fight. It's more an aggession issue than anything. Sounds like she needs a different business. No barking?
Please!

Aggression issues? I hate when people associate one behavior with one breed! smashicon The only negative input I get about Mason are the few that mistake him to be a pit bull. Once I explain to them that he isn't, and not all pit bulls are bad, they usually come around.

No barking? What kind of doggie day care is this? Mason isn't a huge barker, but it's not that he doesn't bark either. Mason does tend to go up to dogs rather quickly sometimes, but backs off so it avoids a conflict. I don't know how many doggie day cares are in my area, but now I'm curious and might have to do some research to see what they say about a boxer....

Angus went to doggie daycare and BARELY passed the test, they called him a "pushy player" and told me I should not be suprised if some dogs don't like that kind of play. But she never mentioned any staring specifically.

Interesting.

I'm sorry - maybe I'm out of touch, but having to pass a test to get into doggy daycare? Obviously it exists because many of you have experienced it, but it just strikes me as outrageous! Get a grip - these are dogs, they're supposed to play, bark, and have fun! Isn't that why we're taking them to daycare? So they don't have to sit at home and be bored?

Are you going to tell me these people (if they had kids, and God forbid they might) would expect their children to go to a daycare where there is no running, no playing, no loud noises...SHEAAAA!?!! Her kids are probably all on prozac (or whatever it is they give kids to make them zombies!)!

Ok, I'm sorry, I'll say again, maybe I'm out of touch, but I think that lady needs a reality check, and I can't imagine she has been in business long, or will remain in business long.

Sorry for length, just hit me funny, I guess!

I can understand they want to make sure a dog is friendly and does not pick fights with other dogs. But no barking or roughhousing is asking way to much. They are there to have fun, right?
