My 5 month old puppy Morgan is not getting the housetraining thing! She is fine in the Kitchen with the baby gate up until we take her out, but she cannot stay on the carpet very long without tinkling. She is really bad at my parents house, she pees all over the house! It is so embarrassing. (I think my Dad gives her too much water!)

We have been crate training her and she is great with that. No accidents in the crate! I wanted to try the bell method. So I bought some bells, now I have no clue how to do it???? She is absolutely freaked out by the bell, it scares her! Somebody please help.

Hello,

I personally have not tried the bell trick. but, I know you hook it up on the door u take her out of to goto the bathroom at a level she can reach it to ring it. When trying to train her to use the bell is to ring it each time you try to get her attention to go out side to do her business, hopefully overtime she'll catch on and start doing it on her own. remember, to let her see you ringing it also, so she can learn.

There are other threads on this subject I would use the search button up top at the right and do some searches.

I have been using a Call Bell (Ring for service) and was going to leave it on the floor. Is that a bad idea? I searched for bell training in the forums and could not find out exactly how to do it. Right now she is terrified of it. Thanks for your help!!!!

Our Josie was also scared of the bell, we just left it alone (by the door) for a few days until she got used to it. Then started ringing it to let her out. It took her about 3 days to figure it out and took us months to figure out when she "really" had to go out.

If she is really afraid of it, try treats, every time she goes near it she gets a treat (I use kibble for treats, just a different brand then her normal food). I'm doing this with the vacuum and it's working well so far.

I have also had the hardest time training Kora. I found this one piece of information that said to put peanut butter (just a dab) on the bell and get her to ring it. Well she started ringing with her tongue and licked all the pb off (I only put it on once but it said to do it enough to keep them interested) and then she started just nudging it with her nose. I kept saying "bell" and she would nudge it and I would open the door. (and lots of praise) Today she has actually rang the bell on her own and sat there untill I opened the door, I was so excited! But she went out and did her business. I think she is getting it! Anyway this helped me maybe it will help you too. :) Good luck!

We trained Boo with the bell @ about 3-4 months. I think it greatly helped to potty train her. We hung a parrot bell on the sliding glass door. Everytime we took her out to potty, we showed her the bell, made her touch it with her nose. Then we let her out. When she went potty, she got a cookie. Even though we knew she had to go, everytime she went out, we made her touch the bell.

As a puppy it took her about a week to learn. I think it greatly accelerated her potty training, because she got some "control" over her ability to ask to go out. She didn't have to wait for us to figure her out.

The main thing is consistancy. She doesn't get to go out unless she rings the bell. If she goes to the door I ask her "where's your bell?" until she rings it. She'll even ring several times if we don't hear her right away.smashicon
