No you had said something a couple post up that had me confused. :)

Yep I know the rescues..for a lot of folks it's going to come as a surprise! :( In 2003 my girl was a puppy
and DM was something I was never aware of till she came down with it at 8 yrs old. :(

I have no idea what the test cost. If someone has details they should put it up here. I only know it can be done.

I don't either for breeders who want to test their dogs but it seems like the $38 special mentioned by furrykidmom could at least be a start. There are a lot of other tests they should do too so I know it comes to a lot once they are ready.

For rescues at least we can test for things like DM and know in advance what we will have to deal with (or not).

This is the email that we recently received from the company that did Woody's test. We paid $58 for his test. We received this email a few weeks ago and ordered it for our new puppy. I think $38 is inexpensive. But this sale ends the end of February. We did not test Woody for breeding purposes. We tested him to see if that was most likely what he had. He had both allelles.

Below is the email from DDC

Last chance reminder for $38 on DDC's Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) DNA Test

Hello,

Just a friendly reminder that DDC's special February promotion on Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) DNA testing ends very soon. If you were waiting to order, don't delay any longer- now is the time!

Normally $58 per tested canine, from now until the end of February, all pre-paid DNA test kits for DM will be made available for a special low price of $38. You can purchase as many as you like now for future use.

For more information about the Degenerative Myelopathy DNA test go to DNA Test for Canine Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

For a direct link for ordering the pre-paid DM kits, please go here... https://www.dnacenter.com/vet/dm-order.html

Other popular DNA testing options include Coat Length and Coat Color tests. These "extra" tests can also be purchased at the time samples are returned for only $20 per additional test (on the same animal). Just indicate with your return samples and include payment for the additional tests when returning your swab samples.

It has always been our mission to provide our clients with the highest quality testing available along with the very best value. Please share this information with others you think may benefit and let us know if you have questions or comments, we're always glad to help.

Thank you for your business.

Oh so cool thank you!!! Don't have a Boxer at the moment. :( I know if I get a Breeder puppy what the situation will be cause I'll be looking for DM clear parents but.. a rescue??

I guess it won't be a deterrent for me with a rescue but I don't want to get sandbagged! :)

I'm getting ready to start working with "Boxers and Buddies" out here..pretty sure they are clueless?

I see no mention of DM on there site. Are you involved in rescue?

Only on the receiving end, some organizations do have a clue about this and some don't.

That being said a lot of "rescue organizations" are just people trying to help animals get out of the gutter and into a loving home, it's a matter of "what's better" vs "what's ideal". They are working out of pocket unless they have some outside funding or are part of a larger group.

They will most likely not be thinking about possible future health concerns caused by genetics when there are much larger and more immediate needs.

I came within hours of receiving one young male boxer last fall, the person in charge of the rescue knows me and that I'm open to boxers so she brought me pictures and his story, he had been found running along the freeway, no tags, no chip. Beautiful young boy boxer too.
At the last minute the guy who found him and turned him in to the rescue decided he wanted to keep him. Broke my heart just a little but whatever is best for the dog is best.

You know how it is. When a boxer is in need who here would turn their back?

Got DNA report - not good news for our female.

For our other Boxer, Madison (AKA Leeta).

"DNA Rasult: At Risk (2 copies of the DM mutation)"

I suspected this.
She is still very healthy and active, it's still hard news.

Gentry Boxers has some good info on DM dogs and explains alot of the details. They have a whole section. Lot of breeders have one carrier and one clear parent. Some have two clear parents,

Most likely anyone getting a BYB puppy or a rescue will have to deal with it in the future.

When we adopted her we accepted whatever she came with, she does give us a lot of joy.
:) Yeah if I +go with a rescue Boxer, same deal here. If it happens it happens but this time I won't be blind sided!

I handled Stu on my own wish I knew half of what I know now! Lot of great information and suggestions in this thread. Hope your guy is still doing well.

And thank you for your thread!

My GSD has "Wobblers/Ataxia" so my days with dogs with disabilities are far from over! I remember crying when he first got brought to my home. He wobbled up to me for a kiss. :) But I looked at him and he was just a happy dog, so if he could deal so could I. :) Wasn't sure I'd have him for more than 5 years, he pasted that mark 2 years ago! :)

My GSD is a great dog and loyal pal but he takes life much more seriously than my baby girl did. Boxers just make you smile! :)

Boxers just make you smile

Yes, they do.

I haven't told my family about the DNA test, she's perfectly healthy now so there's no need to worry anyone prematurely.
I'll be keeping the cart out in the shed after Thatcher no longer needs it. I'll be sure to keep it in good shape.
It's just something that will likely happen in the future, now I'll know the signs when it starts showing - unlike the way it was with Thatcher.
