What testing should you do if you are adopting from a shelter or someone who does not do genetic testing?? What are the main things I should be looking for when adopting??

I have always thought about adoption as "what you see is what you get"...Most of the heath problems are already evident, but the dog needs and deserves a good life so you decide if you can deal with any issues and match up with a dog you are comfortable with. I would stay away from a breeder who does not do health testing and maybe they will get the message to breed more responsibly.
Yes I agree with adoption it is what you see is what you get. Unfortunately so many dogs probably are not adopted for this reason. This time around we had adopted from a rescue. Our baby came to us at 8 months old, with kennel cough, worms and malnourished. Looking at her today you would have no clue about any of it. She is a happy healthy beautiful 16 month old girl.

I totally agree with adoption. I mean, I don't agree with some of these people who breed, but sometimes, you just see a little puppy and don't care what the circumstance is, you know it needs your help and you jump to the rescue. Thanks for your input. I mean, I don't mind coughing up a little more in vet bills as long as the puppy/dog has even a slight chance to live a better life with me ya know? I know its best to buy from a reputable breeder, but some of these little guys are just too cute.
