Testicles

Didnt know what else to name the thread.

My boxer is 5 months old and his testicles are still MIA. The vet is kinda worried and talked about a possible surgery.


What has been normal for you guys?

I was reading and 7 months is the max to wait, if they dont drop by then he is going to have surgery

Here's a link with all kinds of information about it. It's genetic, and dogs that have it or have produced a litter with it, should not be bred, so as not to pass the defect on to any future dogs. The testicles should have started dropping by now. The neutering surgery is more invasive, b/c the vet has to find the testicles (sometimes all the way up in the abdomen area!), but it's important for such dogs to be neutered to lessen the chances of cancer. That happened with Torin and he had surgery. He was going to have surgery anyway but this turned out to be a little more invasive. He recovered just fine.

Thanks for the info. Im going to give him 7 months, hopefully by then they drop. I dont want to breed him so he was going to have a surgery anyways but of course i wanted to avoid complications.

If they are not down by now, they won't be coming. Just plan on having him neutered at 7-12 months of age. The surgery is more complicated than a simple neuter, as the vet will have to go find the testicles.

It is not going to drop. It is too late for that to happen. The canal has closed. A dog with undescended tesicles needs to be fixed due to increased health risks. My Titan had this, one didn't drop. Don't let people saying it's a bigger surgery scare you. They just mean it is not as simple as when they are on the outside.

The vet will make an incision right by the base to see if it's there, if not another cut will be made a few inches above the first in the abdominal area. Then they will have to find it. This is not difficult, it's attached to a fiberous band. The healing will take a little longer, and your dog will need pain meds for a few days. But your dog should do just fine. The hardest part will be to keep him from running and jumping for 2 weeks. Mine was ready to go play like normal at day 4, so I had to crate him a lot.
