terrible scare last night

Nabatie,

I know how heart-stopping that can be. Our last boxer, Chelsea, was allergic to bee stings. We thought she was sunning herself on the patio one afternoon but when we called her she didn't move, and it turns out that her heart had slowed to the extent that she'd lapsed into a coma. I've never seen my mom move so fast in my life! We bundled the dog into a blanket and raced to the vet who gave her a shot of adrenalin to get her heart pumping again. He said that she was very close to not pulling through. Needless to say, our dogs aren't left outside unless someone's keeping an eye on them! Unfortunately we usually find out the hard way if they're allergic to something, and there's no point in taking a chance. One scare of a lifetime is enough!

Good thing Cooper is not allergic to ants! We were at the park yesterday and my daughter was cracking up b/c Cooper ate every ant he saw!

Benadryl is a boxer's friend

Hope Chance is doing better. Think I posted previously that Dani has a flying insect catching fetish...came in one night & one side of her jowls was as big as a tennis ball. She didn't seem to notice, but we gave her a Benadryl and swelling was gone in 30 min...Didn't seem to slow her down tho. Sophia was on Benadryl every night. Dani takes a Claritin Reditab (those melt under the tongue ones) and loves them...wonder if they taste like mint to her?

We joke that Dani probably has ADD because she often has a short attention span...her eyesight is wonderful though. She'll run out into the yard at night and see a bee twenty feet away...and ZOOM!...she's right there. She's soo amazing.

Cheers,

Oh my goodness! How horrifying! I am so impressed that you were able to react so quickly!

Glad chance is on the road to recovery. Give him a big hug from me and Junior!

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear about Chance, I'm glad he's doing better!!!

Do you know what kind of bug he got into? There's a place in Tucson, Arizona that does this thing with snakes, where they teach the dog with electricity to stay away from snakes.

I know it sounds cruel, but I'd rather my dog be taught with a zap to stay away rather than the alternative, a rattler bite! I haven't done it, but if I lived further out in the desert I would.

I don't know if I would do the same for common bugs, but if you have scorps and that's what bit him, I may consider it.

How scary.

PS I have your stickers (Protected by Badassboxer!) Email me.

Debo sends Chance a great big Boxer Hug!!!!

At our old house we had a HUGE, like 6 feet wide by 8 feet tall) Rhodadendron (sp?) flowering bush that would come out in mid may with flowers all over it and stay that way for about 2 weeks. It would attract those really big and scary bees that are round and fuzzy. Well, our Bingo apparently ate one one day and he swelled up like Rocky! His one side was puffier than the other. We didn't have an emergency vet in our area and I didn't know about Benadryl. So, to get the swelling down I had him eat ice cubes and popsicles. It really made a difference and while his body took a while to return to normal completely, it sped things up considerably and made him feel better. Plus he loved the popsicles! It guess the coldness may have decreased the inflamation. The next day I checked with my vet and he said if it happened again to bring him in because usually if they are swollen on the outside, they are that way on the inside too and that is the danger. Needless to say, in the following years every May at the first sign of a bud, a small fence went up around it about 3 feet out from the bush, problem solved! Hope that helps!

Do you just give the dogs regular Benadryl tablets or capsules and how many milligrams or how many tablets can they have? I'd like to keep some on hand for when we are out hiking in case Ruby is allergic to bites. I know she swells a little with mosquito bites, but we haven't had any other types of bites yet.

Wow, that must have been scary! I had to haul my Boxer to the emergency vet one time last fall for a spider bite or something along those lines (we weren't sure what had happened). Her head swelled up a like a balloon and the Benadryl weren't helping. I do use Benadryl right away when these things happen (which is more often than I'd like - Lucy also has had some vaccination reactions).

I let Cassius out in the morning to potty and play, put him in his crate and took off for a couple of hours. Well when i got back i let him out of his crate, took him outside to go potty..you know the drill. went back inside so i could go potty LOL, anyway he walks into the bathroom and the whole side of his face was swollen. He looked like he'd boxed and lost the match LOL, anyway i totally panicked and took him to the vet which they then told me to calm down and they gave him a shot of benadryl. he has thank god left bees alone since then...but i laugh every time i picture his face...he really looked like a boxer lol!
