Just had to talk to people who know where I'm coming from. I let my dogs out last night to play and about 10 min later Rocky was at the door but no Chance. When I went looking for him he was laying in the side yard and would not move. I tried to get him to get up but he was like a wet noodle. Just sink right back to the ground. His gums were as white as his fur. Needless to say I ran him to the emergency vets and as I was waiting to be seen remembered that he had gone after a bug the minute he went outside. So he was having a severe allergic reaction. They gave him benedryl and steroids and I took him home and was up most of the night making sure he was still breathing. He is a lot better now but still groggy and slow moving. I took him to his regular vet who gave more steroids and told me to keep him on benedryl for 24 hours. Now I have to teach him to leave bugs alone. Anyone else's dog have such a severe reaction?

Mine has yet to catch a bug yet. He has chased a few, but never ate one. He just bats them around. Now I am scared of the day when he does eat one! He seems to be So allergic to everything else, I don't know what would happen to him.

I am glad you got him to the vet so fast and that he is making his way back!

Take care wackicon

I am jsut waiting for the day when Betty gets stung by a wasp or bee. She is always trying to get flying bugs and sometimes she does. I've seen her go for wasps but luckily it hasn't happened yet.

Glad to know your pup is ok!

I haven't seen such a severe reaction, but my neighbor has an 18-month old boxer, R.J. that got stung the other day on his foot. Neighbor said he heard R.J. yelp, and within 3 minutes he was laying on the ground, unable to get up. His temperature shot up too. So they took him to the emergency vet and got him stable, but ended out having to have a soft cast put on his foot so he won't chew at the stung area. Neighbor was really kind of freaked out - she said she gave him benadryl but that it didn't help. I guess it was a pretty severe reaction. Kind of scary! I hope Chance is feeling better soon.

I feel for you!!

My dog has had a very similar reaction too. We let him out for 20 min and he either finally caught a bee (his favorite passtime) or ate a spider because his face started to swell up. His face was so swollen, his eyebrows were at least an inch think and his cheeks were also very think. He also had a very high temperature and was very lathargic. It ended up being an allergic reaction to it and he was put on benedril and steroids. He was back to his old self again with in 24 hours. I was up all night with him checking that he was still breathing. I think it was one of my most scariest moments. I hope you baby is doing better. TLC is the best medicine!!! grin2icon

My late boxer, Rocky, was allergic to bee stings. We got him when he was 4 years old, so I don't know if he'd been stung before that. But one autumn day a hornet got him. He layed around curled up in a little ball, so I knew he felt sick. He was okay after a few hours. A week later we were on a walk when he stepped on another hornet. I heard him yelp and saw the hornet. So we walked briskly back home (about 3 or 4 blocks away). The minute we got home, he fainted. His gums were white and he was unconscious. I picked him up and put him in my car (that was no easy task picking up 77 pounds of dead weight). On the way to the vet, he regained consciousness but was totally bewildered. The vet gave him an anti-beesting shot and he acted okay. A couple days later we took him to our favorite vet (100 miles away) and he gave us an epinephrine kit because he said if Rocky got stung again, it could kill him. So we carried that kit with us wherever Rocky went. Fortunately, we never had to use it.

Chief's Pappy - If you don't have an emergency vet please keep a doggy first aid kit around that includes benedryl. I was told 1 mg per 1 pound of weight approximately.

Everyone else. Thanks for you thoughts and I'm sure Chance will be his normal bouncing self in a day or two. Now I just have to figure out how to keep him from chasing bugs!;)

Brutus is also allergic to bee stings and breaks out in hives when stung. Fortunatley he does not have severe reactions and if caught early and given benedryl all we have to deal with is some hives and a sleepy puppy.

I know my vet belongs to a circle of vets which assigns one vet a night to be on call. If an emergency arises you call the on call pager and a vet will return your call. In emergency situations they will meet you at the office. I have also looked in the phone book for other clinics and noted which ones are open later. We also keep a handy pack of benedryl around.

He fought the bee and the bee won!

My male boxer Goliath believes that wasps were put here for him to play with. Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that he is allergic to them. One day several years ago, I came home from work and my Goliath looked like an alien dog from the great beyond.....he was covered with all different sizes and shapes of lumps....covered with them....Yes, I panicked and it was 5pm and our vet's office closed at 5:30..so I called them and begged them to stay there until we could get there..because Goliath had been stung or bitten "hundreds" of times....beacuse that's how many lumps there were!!! The vet said, first "CALM DOWN!" he could not possibly have been stung that many time or he would have been dead....she said what you are seeing is HIVES...and she also said give him Benedryl and make sure he was breathing OK...he was and we did the Benedryl and he was fine...until the next day when I CAUGHT him in the act of catching a red wasp in his mouth..Well that time after being stung in the mouth and throat....he did almost immediately have trouble breathing and he tried to drink but couldn't swallow!!!! That time he also had to have steroids and a night in the doggie hospital....thank God I was home or we would have lost him....So we now keep a good fresh supply of Benedryl on hand and have "Wasp Hunts" all spring and summer to be sure none are taking up residence in or around our yard...by the way I need to mention that my husband is also highly allergic to red wasps, but still conducts the "hunts", so they won't sting the DOG!!!!! djk
