My 13 week old puppy, Hanna, is wanting to chew on everything. She has plenty of toys which are fine for a short time, but I'd like to give her something to chew on that will occupy her for a while. I've heard I shouldn't give rawhide bones or if I do, I need to watch closely and take them away before they get too chewed up or swallowed. What about pigears? They are so plentiful in the feed stores and some dog owners say they are fine and their dogs love them. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm a first time boxer owner. I'd like to know what other boxer owners give their babies for chewing on.

Kong's

My Mia has been going thru this for about two weeks. I went to PetSmart and bought her a KONG. I got the one that is a little smaller than a tennis ball. I either put a treat in it or put some Peanut butter in it and she will chew on it for hours... or untill she gets the treat/PB out of it. I ask the Vet if it was ok to give it to her while she was in her crate, and they said no worries because the KONG was too big to swallow. It is by far her favorite chew toy. It is also very durable... added bonus. Hope this helps.

We are having the same problem with Dempsey. He gets bored quickly with most of his chew toys, we tried the KONG but he was not interested in it at all. We finally bought the pigsears and he loved it! He chewed on it for over an hour. He also is not fond of any treats, we have tried many different kinds and he doesnt have a favorite. He is 13 weeks old and the love of our lives. Good luck with your puppy!!!

With pigs ears there is the same concern as rawhide. We gave Jasper really big pigs ears, but as he got older, he would sorta fold them till they fit in his mouth.

Thanks everyone. I do have a small kong and I've stuck Alpo soft-chewy treats in it and she chews for a couple minutes but then it usually falls out and she's done with it. I've been thinking about trying peanut butter. I keep reading that many people give it to their boxers. My vet told me to give her no people food what-so-ever and we haven't. However, the other day my 4 year old left her half-eaten grilled ham & cheese sandwich on a tv tray table and then left the room. I came in to find the plate on the floor clean as a whistle. Gee, I wonder what happened  . That was all it took. Hanna seemed somewhat oblivious to our food until that happened. The next day she stood in the kitchen and barked like crazy at a porkroast cooling on the counter top. So maybe I'll give the peanut butter a try. I'm just afraid that too many new tastes may cause her to refuse to eat her dogfood. She's turned her nose up to it a few times already. Thanks for your input.

Rawhide works for me.

Hunter is 4.5months old and beginning to loose his baby teeth. I give him a rawhide bone that he chews on until his gums are bleeding and teeth falling out. It seems to really satisfy his chewing. I too am aware that rawhide is not good to digest so I get him the natural flavor and monitor him while he chews. When a section of the bone gets chewy looking I simply cut it off with scissors.

You can also try a frozen carrot. I did this for Tyson and he loved it. The only downside is little carrot bits get all over the place. :)

Freeze it!

Karen- The same thing happened with Diego. But someone suggested to me *freezing* whatever you use to fill the kong. It takes longer to get out and therefore they work harder. It's great! (It won't be long before it's time to get a bigger size) -Anything soft works really well. I use one or more of the following combinations: small training treats or kibble, peanut butter, honey, applesauce, carrots, green beans, canned dog food, mashed pumpkin/squash, apples, bananas, blueberries, oranges. During the warmer months, applesauce and/or juice is a big hit! This of course is an outside-only activity :p

A word of caution though. It took me awhile to figure out that Diego has a sensitive tummy. Because you have a pup, and you know peanut butter works, start there. Then add one or two things and see if she likes it (and it likes her back!) I don't totally agree with your vet about the people food thing, HOWEVER I'm sure it has to do something with making sure the puppy gets well balanced nutrition and preventing a potential picky eater. - Lisa
