Hi

First post here.

I have a 6 yr old white boxer named jazmin,
she has been diagnoised with an arythmic(spelling) heartbeat and is on a course of tablets to help it.

She is being an absolute pig to get the tablets down, i have tried everything with here but we are both getting frustrated and upset about the pills not going down.

Have tried the direct approch, holding her jaw open popping the tablet as far down as i can, holding jaw shut, but still she manages to get it back up a spit it out.

HAve tried in food, but she always find's it!

Have tried diluting in water but this can make here wrech and try to be sick.

She has had courses of tablets before and i have had no problems. What am i doing wrong?

Please some tips or advice or both would be great, just to keep me from pulling my own hair out.

You can email direct on jawchef@aol.com or post here.

Thanks in advance

JOHN

Ronin is the same way, unfortunately. When you poke the pill down as best you can and then shut Jazmin's mouth - do you massage her throat? I do that with Ronin in order to make him actually swallow the pill. No, it doesn't always work (he's pretty sneaky about storing the pill in one cheek and then spitting it out when I'm not looking) but it does help most of the time. Folding it up in a piece of cheese works for him too. Good luck in finding the best way that works for you and Jazmin!

Ginger takes meds bset wrapped in a slice of Amerian cheese. I just put it in the cheese and form the whole thing into a ball and she gobbles it down. Hope this helps.

Sometimes wrapping pills in cheese works for me - but sometimes he eats the cheese and leaves the pill. I can almost always get him to take it with peanut butter - I just roll the pill in peanut butter and then feed it to him. It can be messy, but usually at some point while he's trying to lick peanut butter off of my fingers, I just shove the whole wad in his mouth and he swallows it. (The cleaner method is to drop the wad of peanut butter with the pill in it on top of his food - that usually works, too.)

Good luck! I recently had to start giving my dog daily medication. For the first week or so, he ate it if I just put it in his food, but then he started eating all the food and leaving the pill in the bottom of his bowl, so I had to become more creative!

Mack is never a problem and I have used all the methods suggested.
But our first Boxer, Katie, had to take a lot of antibiotic capsules in her old age. They are really bitter if bitten into and she got "wise" to hot dog chunks, cheese and everything else I tried.
First when doing the "shove it down the back of their throat approach" I put the pill/capsule in a chunk of chilled butter/margarine. It will melt on touching the warm throat and slide down much easier than if it is "dry". Also leaves a good taste in their mouth.
Probably the best method though, is the "3 treat approach".
Use 3 pieces of your favorite treat (hot dogs work well). The first bite is an empty/free bite. Let the dog see you have more. The second treat has the medication in the center and when giving it, hold the third piece right over the dogs face. They will usually gulp the second piece so they can get to the third one.
Good Luck.
PS Also best if you can prepare the treats out of sight of the dog.....after bad experiences, they may know what you're up to!

I use the same method that Nanabear does. I usually coat the pill with Imperial Cold Pack cheese or Liver paste. It works every time. :)

i may be wrong, but i believe that i heard somewhere that certain medications could be crushed and made into a lotion-type substance, which could then be applied to the inside of the ear, and absorbed through the skin...but like i said, i may be wrong--anyone else hear of this??

Hi

Thanks for all the replies, tried a different approch last night, spoke to my vet and ask if the tablets could be dissolved in water and the given, the answer was yes, and thats what i did, with great results, jazmins happy to take them like that so it looks like i finally found a solution.

Thanks again

I have always been the pill giver in the family. I have tried using oil to coat the pill and a number of other things. I have found that placing the pill far back enough to make the tongue go down, like a gag reflex, then wipeing off the nose will make them lick and down goes the pill. Nothing to it.

Glad to see you found a way to get the pill down.:)
