Swollen

My dog was in heat a month or so ago, but her privates are still swollen. It's not as bad as when she was in heat, but still swollen. Is this normal? Also, I also noticed her nipples have really increased in size. I was thinking it could be a false preganancy?? What do yo think? I'd hate to take her to the vet when this is normal for a first heat for a dog.

I'd appreciate your input.

I don't know if it is common but after the first time my female was in heat she never went back to the small size she was before and neither did her nipples. The swelling went down I'd guess about 80% but thats it. At her vet appointment he checked her out and said she was fine. She is just now coming into heat for the 3rd time and boy you can tell immediately. She started swelling up fast. Poor baby its like she walks with a load in her pants for 3 weeks.

I would take her to the vet just to be sure. Also, he can safely have her spayed so that you won't have to worry about this again

It will probably go down to a certain extent, but it will never return completely to normal.

This may be a totally stupid question but why is it seeming like more and more people are asking questions about dogs being in heat? Aside from the obvious and wanting to get information to educate them about this subject.....

IMO I would hope that if people are allowing dogs to stay unspayed that they are doing it for the specific reason of breeding responsibly to better the breed. And it that case, meaning that you have researched the breed, showed the dogs, gained tremendous amounts of education and insight concerning all of the above. Wouldn't somewhere along the way while doing all of that, (and I am assuming that it can take years), the subject of heat and symptoms of heat would have come up??

I am not trying to be a downer, I actually posted questions about heat symptoms myself when Cami was younger and I had to wait until she was 9 months of age for her surgery as she had demodex. I guess my ignorance is that I just assumed that ALL people would want to have their pets altered to avoid the over population of pets and for health reasons.
