I used to think Boxers couldn't swim (due to the same reasons others have already listed), until I met my mentor. She's had many Boxers come thru her home, all could swim...some she had to teach, some were just naturals...some loved water, others didn't (but even those could swim).

Poppins was the first dog I introduced to deep water....the first thing she done when placed in the water was sink. I panicked and grabbed her out! My first thought was she can't swim. I set her aside and grabbed the next pup...the other 4 did much better (they sunk but didn't fight the water like Poppins). I tried Poppins again, she sunk but I waited...it took her a second or two (which is forever when your watching your puppy fighting under water!) but she came up and started swimming. Of the 5 puppies, Poppins loved water most...she'd swim everytime she was given the chance (and still does). :)

sinkers

All 3 of my babies are sinkers...LOL Jazzy loves the water but only if she can touch bottom. Bojax won't go near it and little Maggie is just scared to death of it .She will not even get out of the car if she is near water. Bojax will run along the edge and bark at Jazzy as she jumps waves and chases sticks. But if the water touches his feet he is out of there..LOL!!! I have always heard they had trouble because of thier chests.

duke loves it!

Duke is a great swimmer and he loves it so much! We introduced it when he was young w/ a lab, so he had a good teacher. he won't get out of the pool when we go to our friends house. Although, the heavier he has gotten the more his back end drags while he swims. BUT to answer your question... yes, they can swim if they want to and if they are introduced to it in a positive way:)

Blue Swims!

My guy is the hugest fan of swimming. Seriously, he LOVES it. Hand him a "noodle" and he will just "hang out" too!

No wave too high, no lake too deep! He takes them all on! I often have to call him back because I worry!

What a goofus!

boxers swimming

sheba loves to swim, we started her out in the backyard pool, when we go to beach and are on the boat she loves it. She jumped off the boat and sank one time (scared me to death, told my husband to sell the boat),after that I bought her a life jacket. She knows now if she wants to ride in the boat she has to put the jacket on. That life jacket is the best thing I have bought so far for sheba.....To be safe I would get a lifejacket for piece of mind.

I am going to get one because we want to go boating. I think - if my feet can't touch the bottom I'm going to have a hard time saving a 40k panicing sinking boxer.

Sammi jumped into the pool when she was a puppy and started swimming like a fish...I've never seen a dog that loves the pool as much as this one does!
When the back door opens, she's through it and in the pool before the door is closed. She was jumping in so much (and swallowing loads of water because one of her toys is usually in her mouth) that we've taught her to "use the stairs"...and she does!
A while back, I posted a couple of videos in the Show Off Your Dog forum area.

We live a few blocks from the beach and our girl LOVES the water. She will bolt right into the water...right into the crashing waves and everything! In the beginning I had to keep a VERY close eye on her because she would bolt for the water and start swimming out to sea! I was worried she wouldn't turn around and tire herself out..haha.

In the beginning she was VERY afraid of the water and had a hard time swimming. After a few swimming lessons (mostly from labs and goldens in our neighborhood) she got over the fear and went for it. She was a tad shakey at first (would sink a little and I would have to pull her up) but now she is great.
