Garvin loved to swim. Then he sunk. Now he is nervous of deep water. So am I. Some boxers seem to master swimming. Others are sinkers, rather than floaters. Careful supervision is required. When they go down, they go down fast. We took him to a lagoon yesterday and he was quite happy to stay in the shallows. No interest at all in swimming away. And when he does swim, he likes to swim right AT you and those toenails are sharp!

Jade sunk her first time out, but we kept an eye on her and gave her some guidance and she finally go the hang of it. Now she has no problem with it at all. There is a pic of her swimming at the lake this summer in my gallery.

I was told that boxers cant swin because they dont have atail to balance themselves, but think this is untrue.

Our last boxer Bruno was so big chested he used to go under head first because of the weight!

Elvis wont even go near the water, not sure why!

Garvin has a tail. It didn't help him! I thought maybe they often don't swim well because of low body fat. ????
Garvin was doing pretty well, he would do laps in the pool with you, but then he sort of lost his rhythum and couldn't get going again. Went straight to the bottom butt first. Come to think of it though, his swimming action was pretty goofy, not like some dogs you see going thru the water like a rocket. He looked more like a big grinning moose :)

I heard they don't swim well because of their deep chests. Don't know how true it is. Layla loves the water, but will not go in deeper than her chest. It seems like its about half here of boxers that do like to swim compared to the boxers who don't swim.

I always thought the tendency to sink was because of low body fat, too, but that was just a guess. Roxy LOVES the water but is a sinker. So, when she swims, I leave her leash on, that way, if she gets into trouble, I can pull her back to safety. Although, she loves the water so much, and I live on the river, she has gotten away from me before. (silly girl was chasing ducks)
