Swimming Boxers??

My Lucy is great swimmer, she has even rescuing insticts

However since she is not a purebred(only her mom was a pure bred boxer)I can talk about her mom who was an excellent swimmer and would swimm even in January but her mom's brother wouldn't get closer to water...The size and weight of males may be a problem

Thanks for all your responses. It makes sense to me that the males don't swim because of the barrel chest and added weight. You would think I would be a better swimmer as I don't weigh much and definately don't have a big chest to weigh me down LOL

Buster swims but only if he jumps in and then has too. i.e too deep to paddle.

However he paddles in pools and ponds regularly now and loves it.

My first male boxer, Stoli, was part fish. I'm not sure if he LIKED to swim. But if we were in the pool or we were throwing his ball in it, he could swan dive with the best of them! He was a smaller guy, under 60lbs.

Charlotte who had the body style of a Rottie at 130lbs loved to swim as well. It was more to cool herself in the hot PHX sun, but she was good at it. More like a hippo floating around!

My 3rd, Nuba was petite as well, under 50lbs and she was a good swimmer.

Currently, I have 2 females and 2 males. Archie, our stockier boy can swim, but hates it. Lincoln, the sleaker one will sink. Ruby, our foster hasn't tried out the pool yet and Dixie, 50lb bully mix who is VERY barrel chested LOVES the pool! It took her about 6 weeks to figure out how to do it w/out our help and now we can't keep her out! She's turning into part fish as well.

With my boxers, I'm not sure if it's body type or 'balls' factor. I think that my females were less scared of the water and didn't think twice about going in. My males are very apprehensive and will probably never learn.

Toni loves to swim. She will run into the neighbors pond at full boxer speed and swim and swim. I have tried throwing a ball or stick in for her to retrieve and although she will go after it she can't figure out how to stay swimming and grab the item. My neighbors 3 year old male will not swim. He wades in to his chest but that is as far as he will go. He will stand there watching Toni with expressions on his face ranging from "please come back and play with me" to "what is that crazy girl up to".

Both Murphy and Dixie hate to swim. Dixie will go in almost to her chest, and murphy will just paw at the water from shore. I tried to drag them in but they put a good fight.

My female, Coco loves water and is a great swimmer.

My previous female boxer, Teiga was also a great swimmer and loved the water.

I'm not too sure if I should say that my Champ (M) is a good swimmer or not. He is the first boxer that I ever owned, and to be quite honest the first boxer that I have ever seen swim! I always take him to visit my grandmother who lives on the beach, and all of the times that I can remember up to the last time he really had no interest in water that went above his chest. BUT, this last time that we were there he really seemed to want to try to get out there and swim. Mainly becuase the neighbors had a bouie anchored out in the water. I guess he thought it was a ball, because he kept swimming (if that is what you want to call it. He just isn't very graceful about it. His limbs just seem to flail if every what direction.) out to it and trying to grab it and pull it back to shore with him. Of course the bouie only moved as far as the slack on the rope would let it, and then he couldn't take it any further! He could only stay out there for so long with his swimming capabilities and then he would have to go back to wading to catch his breath. But believe me as soon as he was ready he would dash back out there and try again! It was just hillarious watching him trying to take this bouie back to shore with him time after time after time. He just didn't get it. . So, like I said I am not sure if he would swim better than a female boxer or not. But being how boxer are, I am sure that both of them would have been after that bouie!

Dozer (m) is the swimmer in our family. Laila (f) will stay clear of the water, only going close enough to wade.
It could have something to do with the fact that Laila is a lankier boxer than Dozer. She looks like she is flailing around when she tries to swim...I think her legs are just too long! Dozer, on the other hand, is a little smaller and stockier. He does really well swimming and is getting better and better evertime he goes!

yip here too. bailey will go running into the sea up to his chest but after that hes not too sure. he leaps about in the waves but hes never actually swimming! he loves to try to catch them (and anything else that moves)
