Hi There,

Our 10-1/2 year old white boxer puppy has had diarrhea for over a month now. It has continously gotten worse. (I should mention previously for the past year now, she has had a peeing problem in which she will pee a little while sleeping/sitting/laying down and has no idea it is happening). We have taken her to the vet on numerous occations in the past, as well as tried switchind dogs foods, from Nutro Lamb and Rice, to Ultra Nutro Chicken and Rice (this caused extremely bad gas), we then switched her back to regular Nutro Lamb and Rice, and lastly she is now on Medi Cal, Gastro Formula recommended by our vet. Last week Susie went to the vet for blood tests, which showed neg. for cancer however it showed lack of protein in her blood. The vet assumes, that Susie has inflammation in her intestines. He recommended a biopsy, however we have agreed not to try this approach due to her age. Currently, our vet is looking into other options, as well as retested the blood to test for digestion in the intestine. We have been giving her immodium for the past few days, this has helped some. Has anyone elses dog been through this before, or does anyone have any suggestions or opinions as to how I can help Susie??? Thank you!!

Poor Susie. I am sorry that she is not feeling well. I would try feeding some boiled chicken and oatmeal and maybe add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin. The chicken and oatmeal are easy on the digestive system and the pumpkin will help to firm up the stools.

I hope Susie is feeling better soon. I am sending positive healing vibes your way!

Have you tried the boiled chick&rice diet yet? If so how was she on that? If not, go for it, but starve for 12-24hrs first, just to give the tummy a little resting time.

Has the vet tried any antibiotics at all?

Thank you for the ideas. I went out and bought pumpkin and rice tonight and gave her some. She loved it. The vet is waiting for the results from the blood work before he'll give us any medication for her. I told him we were not going to put her through a biopsy at her age. She has already had four operations to remove many lumps from her when she was younger.
Hopefully this will help her some. She still runs and jumps and enjoys life, so I just want to make her feel better. Mothers always want to take the pain away from their babies.

Steeler had diarrhea very bad!!! We went through all kinds of testing. They were talking biopsy also but I wanted all the other testing done first. Finally we took a stool sample in and found out he has intestinal and bowl problems (dont know how to spell the big vet words) Out vet put him on Salfasalazine twice a day, as well as switching him to the can/dry ID dog food. It has worked wonders!!! Due to these conditions we have to be extremely careful on what else he eats(basically nothing). Have you taken a stool sample in of the diarrhea to be tested? Sending prayers your way in hoping you figure out what is causing this for her:) Let us know what you find out!
Kisses from Buckeye and Steeler

When Lisa has diarrhea I give her plain white rice boiled in chicken stock, she not fussy on it but it seems to work.

The vet has put Susie on Prednisone 5mg. 12 pills for the first 5 days and then decreases the number slowly for the next 25 days. Has anyone had their dog on this? I know their appetite increases but she just can't get enough water. Now she's having so many accidents and we're up almost every two hours and she's still having accidents. Can we not decease the water at night or can this hurt her? She's been on this for 5 days now and there's no change in her diarrhea yet. Have called my vet but hasn't got back to me yet.

Prednisone is a steroid. It does increase their thirst and also their urination so she will be much thirstier and of course, need to pee much more often. hopefully as you wean the medication down, her drinking/urination will slow as well. I would talk to your vet, hopefully they call you back soon.

Steroids

When Angel went through heartworm treatment she was put on steroids and I had to have friends stay with her once I went back to work because her bladder was so full, she would drip and not even know it. We took her out every 10 minutes for 3 days. My wonderful brother helped us out at night we would stay up in shifts. Not fun, but WELL worth it. She's great!!

Prednisone does increase appetite, thirst and urination. All of that is very normal, the lower doses may help. It can also be very hard on their stomach. Lizzie takes pepcid while she is on pred. One 10mg tablet a day. You may want to ask your vet about it.
