Well here we go again, lol! :) A new year and a new puppy! This is Sultan......
dogs046.jpg

My hubby bought him for me as a christmas present, and I absolutely love him!

However even though we have only had him for a few short weeks we have been through alot already.

When we picked him up from the breeder(if that is what you can call him) we were told he was 6 weeks old and he recieved his first set of shots/worming, was on dry kibble and was ready to go to his new home with us.

Well first let me explain that this "breeder" was a filthy person, I should have turned around instantly and ran however this was my christmas present from hubby and he already paid a deposit soooo I went into the house to see my pup.

What I found was horrible!! The house smelled of urine and feces so bad it made me gag slightly upon entering. It was filthy, floors were never swept probably ever, junk piled everywhere and just plain disgusting living conditions for a human let alone animals.

As we are speaking to this "breeder" he tells us that he has a total of 17 dogs(all breeders) not all boxers though, varying breeds, he keeps them at his aunts house outside because she has more property.

We then follow him to a small room, possibly 6 by 6 foot if that where two wire crates are with mom and pups in both crates.

The cutest Brindle female was in one crate with her litter of 4 week old pups 6 or 7 inches away from the other female and her crate(the mom of my pup). The mom of my pup no longer had her pups in with her because they were supposedly weaned and were in the bathroom, however she had a male boxer in the crate with her now because he said the male did not like the cold outside and wanted in.

Yeahhh right, he was just trying to breed that female again as soon as possible is what we are thinking.

Anyhow we got my pup, whom was pretty skinny, when I questioned him about it he said the vet checked him over and said all was well and the pup was ready to go, he had paperwork from the vet also stating this. This is Sultan when we brought him home, just LOOK at those bones sticking out..............

Well we got home and I instantly made an appt at my vet's however we could not get in for a few days because of the holidays.

During those few days Sultan had diarrhea so bad it was pathetic, he was very lethargic for a pup, had a very dull coat, very bony and just not at all in good health.

I went onto AKC to fill out his registration online and find out the birthday is different than on the vet paperwork. Hmmmm, I called the vet he supplied me with paperwork from and come to find the pup I was told was 6 weeks old is actually only 5 weeks old(just turned that actually at the time) and had not been fully weaned however that vet felt the pup would be better off to go to a new home to recieve one on one care.

Sultan was NOT fully weaned and as soon as he seen Leyna(our female boxer) for the first time he tried desperatly to nurse off her.
He would not eat dry puppy food, I wet it down with some puppy formula I went out and bought and he ate that but not great, he had a tough time.

We finally got to my vet who was upset over the whole ordeal quite a bit. He informed me that as of state law you are not allowed to sell a pup under 7 weeks of age. Unfortunatly noone upholds the law enough for these "breeders" to really care and this is what happens.

Sultan had worms, and also a case of coccidia, a sort of bacterial infection causing the diarrhea, it is caused from being in a filthy environment such as these pups were.
He was also dehydrated, and had a low blood sugar level.

Well, another $150 worth of vet fees later and we were home nursing our poor boy back to health.

That was three weeks ago and Sultan is doing MUCH better! The coccidia is gone(or at least we believe) he finished his medicine and goes back to the vet this Thursday for another checkup.
He also finished his worm medicine, however he will be rechecked at every vet visit just to be safe.

He is now eating dry food however that poses another problem, he is a verrrrryyy picky eater. He does not like Science diet, wich is what the vet recommended, eats Pro Plan but really does not care for it either, he will eat about a small handfull a day and that is it.

So we are working on some new feeding ideas and I am thinking of switching to RAW.

He has gained weight from when we got him and has a LOT more energy. He is the devil in disguise, LOL! He loves to torture the poor cats, and he loves to hold the big dogs down and viciously growl and bite at them wich gets him put in the crate all by himself(wich he hates, lol!)

All in all I would never trade the little guy for anything! But I just want everyone out there to know that these puppymills and backyard breeders are everywhere!!!

I have written a statement to AKC about this person and the conditions of his dogs and his selling of pups younger than allowed by our state law and I hope they take away all his rights for registering with them.

I know that is not much but perhaps if he looses business from that he will breed less or stop alltogethor! I also put a few calls in to our local animal control and shelters however I am not getting much cooperation from any of them.

It is going to take some work to shut down this breeder but I am determined and am not going to let this go.

Sultan is lucky he found a great home with us, I cringe with the thought of what will happen to those other pups that do not get sold.

This is Sultan now....

What a horrible story. It's inconceivable to me that people can be that cruel and heartless all for money. Sultan is one lucky guy to be in your home and I wish you all the best in getting this puppy mill shut down. By the way, I love his name!

Thank-you, it took me awhile to find the right name for him. It amazes me at what some people will do for a few bucks ya know! All the while the animals suffer, I am just more suprised this guy is so close to us and we have never heard anything about him before:(

first let me say your puppy is adorable:) when i saw the first pics of how skinny he was my stomach just sank, you should never see bones especially on a puppy. his updated pics made me smile...that person if i dare call them that, needs to be raided and have every animal taken from his and aunties house immediatley if you cant get any satisfaction with local authorities call the state police or go to aspca and contact them imm. they will help you with this situation if all else fails go to the medial tv or paper and i bet then you will get results( you dont have to give a name to do all this) i know penn is one of the biggest puppy mill states in the u.s and i was just reading an article on how they they are trying to pass some law for that state( sorry i dont remember where i read it could have been online or paper ) on the puppy mlll business. im glad you didnt turn away and leave at least one puppy got out of that hell thanks to you and your husband. please make those calls and help out those pups. hope to hear some good news. good luck. michele ps. you can also contact a vet or med hosp on help for getting them out of there.

Thanks bucca, we are working at getting him healthy, still got a way to go but we have his whole life :)

I agree they should raid that place and remove all his animals however it is not as easy around here as one might believe to have someone prosecuted and/or animals removed for overbreeding and filthy conditions.

It is alot of red tape and what I find is alot of Lazy law enforcemnt around this area.
Also since the dogs I seen were not in dire circumstances, in other words starving to death and such then I really dont have viable proof enough for the local animal welfare people to go in :(

I know it sounds dumb but believe me I have made calls and have others making calls also.

I also spoke to an attorney about placing an advertisement in the local papers telling people not to purchase puppies from this person however I was told that would be illegal and considered slander soooo there went that idea.

I just keep spreading the word about him to everyone that will listen and hopefully it will get somewhere.

Thank God you rescued Sultan from that horrible environment. Even though he wasn't fully weaned, he was probably better off with you. He's a cutie and looks so healthy now!

Sultan is a very hadsome boy and his story heartbreaking until the end. I am so glad that you are doing something about the conditions that these poor animals are living in. Your boy is a lucky one to be in a home where he and his health is a priority.

Like the others, I agree that Sultan is very lucky to have made his way into a good, loving home. Poor dear...trying to nurse from Lenya. It is good to see that he is already putting on weight. He is a gorgeous boy!

Thanks everyone, he is doing good, and I hope that the other pups are doing good as well.

I have posted an ad in the local papers around here looking for other people that bought pups from the same litter, trying to be nice about it I put in the ad that I wanted to keep track of his littermates.

I havent gotten any responses as of yet but I am hopeful.
I am hoping to get as many people togethor as possible that bought a pup from this person that was in poor health(not hoping they were all in that condition but realizing they might have been) so we can take all the evidence to the local authorities to force them to do something.

It is sad that more people are just not educated about breeding and backyard breeders and puppymills :(
