My husband and I are thinking of adding a 2nd dog to our house in about a year, so I'm getting started on my research. We currently have a beautiful boxer boy, almost 10 months old and a kitty. We have two small children, 4 and almost 2. We may have more children, so the days of little kids are not necessarily over. Our house is on the smaller side and so my husband really would like to go with a smaller dog instead of another boxer :( (I really wanted to add a brindle girl...will have to be later in life I guess) So we need a dog that is good with other dogs, small kids, and kitties. I don't want a dog that requires much in grooming, or that sheds a lot. We have a larger fenced yard. The dog will be a house dog, and will sleep in our room. So far the pet selector websites have suggested a whippet, a beagle and a toy poodle. What do you think of these breeds blending in with my family? Other breed suggestions? All input would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

I'd pass on the whippet (sight hound that will be difficult to train not to chase the cats) and the beagle (noisy). Given that you have a boxer already which is reasonably large, if you go for a poodle, I'd personally pick the miniature rather than the toy (more likely to withstand the boxer LOL).

If you wanted to get another boxer I would also suggest getting a boston terrier. They are small than boxers and have some of the same looks and personality as a boxer.
On the toy poodles, I would pass having small children. My grandmother had toy poodles when I was growing up and none of her dogs like any of her 10 grandchildren.

The boston terrier would be your best bet, there are a few other breeds I would suggest but a boston terrier would be the best. They are just miniature boxers, just the same but in a smaller body. Beagles are great and would work well but they do tend to need to stay busy all the time. The poodle doesnt usually do well with kids and the whippet is a very fragile breed and ten to "break" easy. My Fiance and I were also looking in to getting another dog in a little bit and were wanting a smaller breed. Shih-tzu's are also a great breed, some people tend to think that they arent well with kids but all I have seen and the research I have done point towards them being just fine as long as they are trained and the kids are taught how to act around them. We are looking at possibly getting one.
I also wanted to add that we have a rat terrier and she is just wonderful with our daughter who is 15 months old, great with our other dogs, learn quick and are on the small side, ours will only get 9 lbs, they range from 9-30 lbs depending on the "type" you get.

I have a boxer and an English bulldog. They get along great and the bullie is SUCH a lap dog. But they are still pretty big. So I would agree with a boston. My aunt has one, and he gets along great with Mac and Moe - super cute, and acts just like a boxer...and they come in brindle

If you want, you can e-mail me and I would be happy to give you the name of the board I belong to. I have two children Zak is 11 and Kelcie is 7. I also bring Bugsy (BT) to my parents house and she loves to play with my two year old nephew and six year old niece. Kaelyn (my niece) gets down on her knees and Bugsy just goes nuts licking her.

I too, vote for a Boston. Check out my gallery and see just how cute Scampy and Joe are together. The BT is a really tough bred and can handle most of what a Boxer dishes out. I've actually had to save Joe from Scampy a few times!
