stupid vets

My wife took our puppy zoey in this morning to get spayed. I gave her info to take along about the "ace" and to tell the vet not to use it and have "no ace" put on her records. My wife called me crying, telling me that the vet didn't believe any of it and he wasn't going to use much anyway, After she insisted he not use it. I called the vet immediately and told him that if he uses it i'd file a complaint and he said he would not. I just had to let somebody know and let my frustration out so thanks for listening

Wow that's really crummy. When my boy went in for his foreign body removal I spoke to my vet about what they used and they don't even use ace but I requested that they write it on his chart anyway and she didn't bat an eye lash, said no problem did it right in front of me so I knew it got done, but they don't even stock it she said so for their practice there couldn't ever be an oopsy, she mainly wrote it in there in case we ever took him someplace else later down the road. VERY nice about it, didn't make me feel bad or anything.

I am very sorry your vet wasn't very nice about it. I'd start shopping for a new vet if I were in your shoes. Good luck!

I just had Aspen spayed today too and made sure that there was no ace used as well. The place I go also does not use it at all but were educated enough to have a discussion with me about it and the potential effects in certain breeds like boxers, etc.

ya,the first vet i was going to have my guy neutered at looked at me like i was crazy when i said no ace,his remark made me mad when he said,"we've been using ace as a sedative for years and have never had a problem with it",the vet that did the surgery didnt use it thankfully,i think the more educated i become about the lack of education some of these quacks have is sad,maybe they just arent teaching 21st century practices in vet school anymore.

If a vet questioned my wishes on Ace, I'd be finding a new vet. Some vets forget who pays their bills. Although we are not medical experts, I think we have all heard the horror stories on Ace and know what can happen. It is our decision whether or not to take that chance, NOT the vets. :(

I would definitely find a new vet. Also, if you search you should be able to find a posting on ace that has a link to the actual notification/info about the dangers of ace and boxers. Perhaps take that into the vet - it might save some the life of some other dog in the future.

BTW - how long has the vet been practicing?

Crazy Vets! The stories I hear makes me very thankful for my vets!

I wonder if some, and I mean some not all, vets go into the practice cause its good money, guarenteed work, don't have to deal with too many people, and no patients that can complain. Guess it's like any other medical field ~ there are the quacks.

But as the owner of the pet, the payer of the bill, I should have every say in the medical care of my pet. It's not like the insurance companies control the animal medical field ~ yet!

Good for you for speaking up loud and clear!! I agree with printing the information on the dangers of ACE for Boxers, and taking it in to your vet. Also personally verify that Zoey's chart has the NO ACE in red written on the front. I too would be looking for another vet if you sense any resistance and are uncomfortable with him.

Today was the first I heard ACE and it side effects. Star had surgery a couple of years ago and the vet told what he was going to use and said it was the safest for her because boxers had side effects to other sedatives. So apparently he knew. If I was your wife I probably would have walked right out of the vets office. And on the way out let him know I have a big mouth and would let every one I know how I was treated. I've had only one bad experience with a vet. Star had allergies to A LOT of things! Both food and enviromental. We had just moved to Kansas. I didn't know anyone, so I couldn't ask for any references, so I took Star to the vet that was closest to my house. Her allergies were so bad she was loosing all her hair. When I took her in and explained Star's history he looked at me as if I were crazy and told me it looked like mange. After the test for mange came back negative he reluctantly gave her an antihistamine shot. The whole time we were there he didn't once pet Star. Like every other Boxer she was very loving and couldn't understand why he wouldn't pet her. He would literally step back from her. Needless to say we never went back to him. From that point on I asked everyone I saw with a dog who their vet was. I found a wonderful one after that who was also a boxer owner.

My husband is in the Army and we've moved a lot. I don't pack my vet records anymore and carry them with me so I can show them to a new vet.
