Hi all!
I just have a couple of questions. Almost overnight, Angus' breath and face area has gotten VERY stinky. He can pass by us and we notice it. Even when he is in his crate for awhile the whole area stinks. It is the same smell all the time. I am not sure or convinced that it his just his breath. I was thinking maybe it was his lips or maybe a sinus infection because I am now noticing dry crusties on his nose area. Anyway, I mentioned it to his puppy class teacher who is a vet tech. and she said to wash his face and lips with phisoderm (sp?) and water. I haven't done this yet because I wanted to hear from all of you and what you think (you guys know Boxers like nobody else!:D ). Like I said- it is really bad. At certain times more than others such as in the morning, etc.

Thanks ahead of time!!

I know he is just a puppy but have you looked at his teeth. I have a friend whose dog had horrid breath...smelt like something died... and when I opened her mouth she had a broke rotted tooth in her mouth. I dont know why my friend never looked but after the tooth problem was taken care of the smell went away.

When we first got Trudy she was very stinky!! We thought it was just puppy breathe, but when we took her to the vet and asked about it the vet smelled her breathe and said it was not the normal puppy smell and it ended up being worms..eeeww...those are all gone now!! so maybe you want to have your vet take a look, or a whiff:D

EARS!!!! Check his ears! If he has a yeast infection they could be really fowl smelling. Has he been scratching at his head/ears or shaking his head a lot?

If not that, check his hair/skin. Is he losing hair anywhere on his body/face? Not so much the top layer coat, but the bottom. It'll almost look as tho' his hair is thinning. This smell could also be a side effect of onset of demodectic mange. It's very common in Boxer pups. Pharaoh had a small case of it when he was 7 months old after being neutered.

LEt us know what you find!

Hi guys, thanks for responding so quick!
His ears are very clear and clean, had those checked by his doggie class teacher (the vet tech.). We are going to check out the broken tooth thing suggested first. He does have about 2 little bitty front teeth that look smaller than the others. I figured he broke those while chewing on one of his toys or something. I didn't even think about them rotting or anything. Maybe those are the culprit. I am going to make an appointment for him on Tuesday if I can to rule out the other things.

Thanks,
Bekka

I used to use Phisoderm to wash my face when I was in high school, from what I remember it is a very drying soap. Keep us updated on Angus!

Stinky Face !!

Hi Bekka! Just wanted to let you know too that I had a stinky face problem with Booder and have just now resolved it!!! His beautiful face was so stinky that as much as I wanted to kiss kiss kiss him, I just COULDN"T!!! Does your Boxer have an extra amount of wrinkles on his face, or around his eye area??? I discovered that's where the odor was coming from in Booder! In between the folds of skin near his eyes! Each morning now I clean these areas with a cotton ball and a product called tear clear. It has worked wonders! If this is your problem, be sure to dry each area well with a soft towel after cleansing. Booder is no longer my stinky puppy! Good luck to you! Jicksies:)

Hey Bekka, did you find anything out yet? My Emma has very stinky spit. I have to wash my face off after kisses, because I can smell it on my skin. I too have checked her teeth, and being that she leaves smelly residue on us, I know it's from her saliva. Keep me posted on your diagnosis!

Hi everyone-
I am taking Angus to the vet on Tuesday (tomorrow), just to check things out. I am leaning more on the culprit being something to do with his mouth now. I don't see any rotten teeth- but I may not be looking for all the right signs.
jicksies- he does have some wrinkles around the tops of his eyes-but I just smelled them (sounds funny :D ) and they smelled normal. Then, he opened his mouth and I nearly passed out  .
karens- yes, he does have stinky spit. I usually wash my hands alot because he licks them all the time.
WAT- I have never used that soap before, and I am glad you mentioned that. I didn't use it right away just for that reason- I needed more feedback and advice. Thanks!
Thank you all for your feedback!! I will let you know after I hear from his vet.
