Boxer Buddy
Last Friday we made the hardest but most loving decision ever...and that was to let our Stella girl go. It breaks my heart that we were only able to spend a little over a year with such a sweet boxer baby but she had fought her kidney failure from the day she was born and at 16 months she couldn't fight any longer. The week before, our vet had told us that her creatinine was so high that his lab couldn't even register it. And she got to the point where she no longer wanted to eat because of the stomach ulcers :( (which we thought we had controlled with medicine.) In the end, she went peacefully and we felt at peace with our decision.

Everyone had always told me that the end would be easier. That at the end you know what you have to do. I have to agree. Initially finding out that she was terminal was gut wrenching. Every vet visit where we awaited test results (never postive) seemed to rip me apart inside. And now she's running free with our other boxer boy. So that at least makes us smile, a little.

I'm sorry for your loss. 16 months is way too short of a time for her on earth. But at least you were able to let her peacefully cross the bridge.

Stella was obviously very loved.

Dear Hennypenny,

Your Stella was obviously a very loved little boxer. She certainly knew how much you loved and cared for her. Your unselfishly helping her to slip away quietly was one of the kindest acts us pet-lovers can do for our furry friends. Sadly, it will soon be time for my wife and I to help our Ribby across the Rainbow Bridge. She's been diagnosed with stomach cancer - at a very young and playful 9 1/2 years young. From my reading here, I've learned the three of us are pretty fortunate to have had each other for this long. Honestly though, if Ribby lived for 30 years it wouldn't be long enough! We absolutely adore our little girl!

A friend just bought my wife the novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain. I'd already purchased it on my Kindle, based on my reading the first few pages in an airport bookstore. Those pages (maybe the whole book) are from a dog's point of view. "Enzo" is old and has decided he doesn't want to suffer the indignities of "doggie-depends", dragging himself around on a cart, dealing with cataracts, etc. He's hoping his owner will help him transition into the final phase of life... Enzo apparently believes in reincarnation and just wants his current suffering to end. I'm anxious to read it but as I've said, I've just made it through the first few pages... However, it comforts me to read what a gifted author believes are the thoughts of an old but loved dog. I believe he's 100% accurate!

My Mom passed away (finally) of COPD this past June. We were all happier the day after she died than we were the day before she died. How sad for us all that the four of us, her adoring children, could do less to end her suffering than we could have done if she was an older dog or cat...

After we eventually help our Ribby cross over the bridge, Brenda & I will go boxer shopping almost immediately. We'll have to! We just know that boxers leave behind a set of instructions for each other on how to care for their pet humans. This became obvious when Ribby came into our lives upon our sudden loss of her predecessor, Chelsea. Well, we don't want those instructions to become misplaced - they saved us a ton of work last time - so we'll get another boxer as fast as humanly possible!

With sincerest sympathy,

johann

So sorry for your loss. Stella is able to run and play now though with a lot of new boxer friends.

RIP Stella
