Bosco had a lump removed from the top of his head on Thursday and when I picked him up he had 10 staples (that were pretty crappy looking) I asked about the staples and also why they didn't use stiches.

Anyways, somehow Bosco tore open a small part of his incision and a staple has sprung open and sticking out. I'm very scared, called the emergency hospital and they said to keep an eye on it. I asked her do all vets use staples and she said it is quicker so I said you just do what's more convenient for you and not what's more important?
Should I take him in right now or wait until first thing in the morning to his vet? I know I'm going to loose it on the ladies in the vet office. My dh is going to the store to buy one of those oversized bandaids that puff up over the "area"

Is there something else we should do or take him in now???
And, should I request stiches?

Any help would be greatly appreciated right now, thanks

Hi,
I think he will be okay with only 1 staple being sprung, dh is great for going to buy the bandage, that should help. You can call your vet tomorrow and see what they want to do. They use staples on people too. The important thing is that Bosco made it through the surgery and will be ok right? You might want to ask the vet that did the staples instead of stiches the reason instead of losing it on the ladies in the vet office. I hope the lump is ok and I'm glad Bosco is doing fine otherwise. By the way, stiches break open too, so in the mean time give him a big hug and be happy he's there with you.

It will probably be fine until morning. Just don't let him rub or scratch at it.

Staples are just fine. In fact my guys seem to not bother the staples as much as regular sutures, so I would not worry about that at all. Staples are used commonly for many types of wound or surgical closures.

Don't worry. ;) I know, easier said than done. :)

Depends on the area, somtimes staples hold better than stitches. Only your vet can tell you why they were used. I agree about not getting frustrated with the ladies in the office; they had nothing to do with the staple issue. I think that with only one popped staple, everything will be OK, at least until moring (as long as you can keep him from scratching it). Good luck, and sending B9 vibes on the lump that was removed.

I appreciate the help......Thank you!

It was a long day yesterday so if you can't tell I was a little emotional. Very tired and scared b/c this was a first.
I took Bosco to the vet first thing this morning(Everything I said last night was thrown out the window, I felt better) and the technician was very nice. They said it appears it started to get an infection so they took him back, cleaned it up really good and gave him a few new staples.

Hopefully the new antibiotic will help, I take him back at 7:00 A.M on Tuesday for a check-up
