Spotty's people

Super Boxer
This is Susan’s husband Keith writing this note; Susan is out of town until the weekend.

One of our boxers, Spotty, has been having some health problems recently and despite a couple of recent visits to the vet, we’re still not sure of what’s going on. So we thought we’d post this to you to find out your thoughts.

Last Friday evening (about an hour after eating) Spotty was at his usual place, sleeping on the sofa. As his sat up to leave the sofa I noticed he wasn’t looking well. His eyes looked a little “glazed”, and as he walked his steps were short and halting, and his pace slow. He laid down on the floor and I noticed his legs had begun to tremble. Within a few minutes his entire body was trembling and his breathing was shallow and had sped up, as had his pulse. His eyes were not darting about or anything, but he did look quite stressed. We arranged to get him to the local emergency vet service and there he was given a thorough physical exam. The only abnormality was his temp, which was slightly elevated (39.5C, normal is 38.5-39C). No signs of poisoning. While at the vet, he began to improve; his trembling lessened and he began to walk around, checking the place out. The vet thought it likely was something neurological (perhaps a stroke), and suggested we allow Spotty a few days to see if he would completely recover.

We took him home, where he slept most of the rest of the day away; he looked very tired. Within a couple of days he was completely back to normal! His appetite came back quickly. Throughout his down time he was able to go to the bathroom normally.

So we thought (hoped) it was a one-time thing but unfortunately it happened again, last Monday evening. It lasted a little longer and seemed a little more severe. I talked to our regular vet and arranged an appointment the following morning; allowing him the night to recover. He was given another physical and a blood test and urinalysis. Everything came back normal (blood cells and organs okay, no signs of poisoning) with the exception of a slightly elevated cholesterol level, which the vet felt wasn’t a concern on its own. The vet speculated that it could be epilepsy, as symptoms associated with seizures can range from almost nothing to the horrible “grand mal” type. He explained there is medication for epilepsy in dogs; he suggested we allow him a few days to recover.

Since then he has recovered somewhat (normal appetite, drinks usual amount of water, no bathroom problems), although his energy level is way down. He sleeps a lot and is walking at about half his normal rate (his walking motion appears normal).

However, yesterday he saw a cat across the road (cats get him excited) and he ran over to the fence barking; his bark was weak and he was definitely favoring his right front leg as he ran. I mentioned this to our vet and he seems perplexed; he suggested he see Spotty again if he doesn’t return to normal within a day or two.

Does anyone out there have any ideas, or shared similar experiences? We’re wondering if he’s had a couple of strokes. We’ll have him to the vet again soon if his current condition doesn’t improve by tomorrow.

Poor Spotty - I hope you find the root of the problem and gets better soon! I don't have experience with this, but it sounded like a seizure from what I've read about here before. The following is link to another thread about that topic, and you can also click on the blue/grey Search button in the upper right corner and also try the word "fits".

Good luck and please let us know about Spotty's progress... Lisa

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I had a pup with the same problems and exact symptoms. It turned out to be epilepsy. The good news is though you can administer phenol barbetol and it will control the seizures. The only problem is that they must be monitored closely. Any bumps to the head or any over stimulation can and will cause more severe seizures. I unfortuantly and through severe pain had to put my pup down because it just got to painfull to watch him suffer. Sorry

Sending you positive vibes for Spotty. In all the bloodwork that has been done, do you know if your vet did a full thyroid panel? I've read on other lists that seizures *can* be related to hypothyroidism as can a hoarse bark (but usually only after leaving it untreated for long amounts of time). Good luck and please keep us posted.

I am so sorry to hear that Spotty is not feeling well.

I think that the seizure conclusion could very well be true, but I thought I would throw in my two cents worth!

Tegan had very similar experiences as you are describing, but with a very different outcome than a seizure. Tegan was diagnosed with a slipped disc in her back. The way that we new something was wrong was because we came home to find her lying on the floor and her back legs were trembling. The first thing that I thought was seizure because we have a family cocker spaniel with seizures.

We did all the blood work and everything came back normal. Tegan was walking but not normally, her steps were short and she was not putting all her weight on one of her legs, so we thought that maybe she had injured her leg while we weren't home. During all of this we also noticed that Tegan was not eating the same and her activity levels had dropped tremendously. The vet gave her some pain and anitinflamitory medication and sent us home. The medication worked and Tegan was back to her normal self again. Shortly after she began to walk funny and tremble again. We brought her back to the vet and he did a manualy inspection of her spine and sure enough he found a very sore spot and thought that something just wasn't right. He had to REALLY manipulate her back to get a reaction from her - they try and be so tough and hide thier pain.

After a set of x-rays we could see the deformaty in her spine. Since then we have been seeing a chiropractor with her and she is back to herself!

I am not saying that this is what is happening to Spotty, but it is an option that you may want to ask your vet about.

Oh no. Lots and Lots of positive vibes headed your way. General has fainted once back in December. It was really scary. Nothing since though. I took him to the vet but they really didn't come up with anything. At this point I just keep an eye on him. I wish you all the luck with this. It is not fun at all when our babies are sick.
