Spaying Question

I have a 13 week old female boxer whom I plan to have spayed. The question is when? We were advised by the breeder to wait until her first heat (I can't remember exactly what the reasoning behind this was), but the vet recommends we get her done as soon as she is of age?

I'd really appreciate your opinions and reasoning behind them.

I would urge you to search the board by using the grey button at the top titled SEARCH and type in "spay" and you will receive a wealth of information.

Spaying female dogs eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of mammary cancer, especially if your pet is spayed before her first heat cycle.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no reason to wait until your female pet has gone through a heat cycle to have her spayed. There are NO medical benefits in waiting in fact, it is better for her later health to NOT go through a heat.

Jasmine is seven months now and she was spayed at six months. Our vet said to do it before her first heat because of the reasons listed above. The surgery went well and she is back to her self full strength. After researching I decided that the idea of waiting until after her first heat was not true and that it was best for her to get it done before her first heat. Good luck.

Spay her BEFORE her first heat!!

Contrary to what your breeder told you, spaying before her first heat cycle reduces her chances of getting mammary cancer by 93%. (You can do a search on yahoo to confirm this information.)

Nedra was spayed at 6 months, that seems to be the norm, plus it was what I was comfortable with, given the information above.

Good luck, and remember NO ACE!!

ACE..

I have a question about ACE(which I have never heard of!)
I will have my girl spayed in a few weeks, would anybody know if ACE is used in widely by practices in Australia? If so, what are the alternatives I can ask my vet to use? Thanks

A safe alternative to ACE is Isoflorine. That is what they used on Nedra for her spay.

Not sure about Aust, but ACE is fairly commonly used tranquilizer here in the US. Most vets prefer using it because there is little to no chance of the patient waking in the middle of a surgery. Other breeds, such as terriers seem to be fine with it, but large and brachysephalic breeds such as the boxer have problems with it while they are under. It has been observed that they go into cardiac arrest while they are asleep and it is impossible to bring them out of it because the drug takes so long to wear off. Isoflorine is an inhalent anesthesia that is a bit lighter and it wears off quicker, so if problems are encountered, it is easier to bring them out of it.

I hope this helps!

As Jessica stated, ACE is a widely used tranqualizer here. In answer to your question, a safer alternative to ACE would be ketamine. Ketamine is commonly used as a preanesthetic agent. It wouldn't be a bad idea to also discuss with your vet what type of anesthia they use. I am in agreement that Isoflurane is one of the safer anesthetics however it isn't as commonly used as I thought. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Jessica and Aimee, it's much more clear to me now, although Im getting more and more nervous about putting her under! Although I understand she's still relativley young, does anyone think there would be a higher incedance of something going wrong due to her age? Thanks again.
