Spay Incontinence Questions

Hello All,
My boxer baby Evie is about 2 years old, and was just formally diagnosed with spay incontinence. I had been treating her with fresh ground parsley in her food for the past 5 months or so for leaking urine. The parsley seemed to work at first, but then it just stopped and the leaking began again.
I was tired of watching my husband put diapers on her, so I finally caved in and took her back to the vet. The vet perscribed Proin, 50mg twice a day. She's only been on the Proin now for 3 days, but I have not seen an improvement at all. Today she's leaking quite a bit actually, and the diaper went back on. She seems very depressed, and did not touch her dinner (VERY unusual for her). For those of you who have used/use Proin, how long did it take to see results? Did your furbabies experience any side effects? I am worried about her not eating, and worried about what I can do if this drug doesn't work at all for her. She gets depressed wearing diapers and she's embarassed when she leaks....definately affecting her happiness here. :(

My lab mix is on Proin and I think it took about a week or so before we saw any results, but she's been on it so long now it's hard to remember. We haven't had any more problems with her on the Proin, so stick with it if you can! Good luck!

My girl had it and was put on a low dose of medication (Phenylpropanolamine), she did great with it and we found no side affects whatsoever. In fact she was happier cause she was no longer having accidents (that made her feel bad). If she keeps on not eating or not being herself, I would have some blood work run on her to rule out other things. My girl was initally diagnosed with S.I. turns out she had kidney failure, but she was lethargic and getting sick. Good luck and hugs to your girl

Anyone else?

She's been on the Proin for over a week now, still no improvement in the leaking, still having to put diapers on her, and she's still not eating normally.
:( I called the vet, they are supposed to return my call this afternoon, but I was just wondering if anyone on here had anything to add? Please help.

An Update:
Had Evie on Proin alone, 50 mgs twice daily with no results and then for a while 3 times daily with no results. Still leaking.
Tried DES alone for a while. Evie would leak it seemed after 2 days without a pill, so was trying to give her a pill every 2-3 days. The vet doesn't want to give it more often than this because of the side effects that could result.
The des doesn't seem to be working, but now we are trying a combination of DES and Proin. She is still on the des once every 2-3 days...and was trying 1/2 50mg Proin twice a day, she was still leaking. Now trying a whole 50mg Proin twice daily along with the des every 2-3 days. She's still leaking! My vet wants me to continue to try this therapy up to 3 proins a day, with the des. I am ready to give up! 3 Proins a day will definately bring back her appetite problems. She's still wearing a diaper 3-4 days a week, and I feel terrible cause she is not herself with the diaper on. She's depressed and uncomfortable. I don't know what to do! Anyone out there who can make any suggestions at all? :(

I have never had a dog with this particular problem, but I can understand your frustration. After a quick look online, I can see why you'd rather get her off the Proin too!

Had you considered consulting a holistic vet? Sometimes when the 'traditional' drugs just aren't working, it's worth while looking at different alternatives.
