SOOOOO confused about shots!

Hi PawPrints,

I`m not sure where I heard it but I thought I had read it in a MBF catalog brochure maybe. I have been out of the circuit for a few years (4 years) but it seems to me that when I was trying to enter that I had read something about records. I don`t know if I miss read or if on that given day of show something was needed to varify (but I was never asked to view any vet records of vaccines). I will go back and look and see if I can find what I read. I do remember at that time of entering that I had a lot of different opinions on how often I should vaccinate for kennel cough and for parvo if I was going to show. Some recommended (show breeders) I vaccinate every 6 months for the kennel cough and my vet highly disagreed and didn`t even want to give the first nose drops for it. He said many times that gives a pooch kennel cough just because it is inhaling a foreign substance that its body may react to. If there is something further that I need to know about vaccines and the show circuit, please advise.

There may be a possibility something of that nature is written in the premium list somewhere, but I don't recall seeing it nor being told about it by a superintendent. In all my years showing, no one has ever asked to see a shot record on a dog at any show I have been to. Now, when I am showing a dog, I DO give yearlies. And because it is so rampant in CA, I give kennel cough vaccinations every 6 months. All it took was getting an upper respiratory infection in my 6 month old Booker T to realize this was something I should vaccinate against. Once a dog is not longer being actively shown, I go to every 3 years for vaccinations.

Thanks for the info! That does make since being that the pooch in question would be around that many dogs and being exposed to so many elements.

I did find a catalog and it states (just for reference): Due to the threat of rabies in the area, we suggest that a rabies certificate for each dog be available in case it becomes necessary to produce it. It said nothing about vaccine records.

I've seen similar statements, as well, but have never seen them enforced. The AKC has recently required that the following phrase be added to all premium lists:

"Exhibitors should follow their veterinarians’ recommendation to assure their dogs are free of internal and external parasites, any communicable diseases, and have appropriate vaccinations." (Additionally, clubs should include any specific local or state health requirements; for example, proof of rabies vaccination).

Now, the UKC is much more strict about it, their Rules state:

Required inoculations. All dogs six months of age or older must have inoculations for Rabies, Canine Distemper and Canine Parvovirus to be eligible to compete at UKC events. Dogs under six months of age present on the grounds of any UKC event must have current inoculations for Canine Distemper and Canine Parvovirus. Failure to comply with this paragraph will result in disciplinary action.

For the original poster, the usual puppy shots would be parvo and distemper. Sometimes there's leptospirosis, but some people skip that and some ask that it be given separately (that's the one they usually react to if they have a reaction).

I would absolutely not give lyme, bordetella (kennel cough) or any other truly optional vaccination at the same time (and whether I'd ever do it would depend highly on where I lived and what the dog's immune system was like).

We had a nasty crud going around here last fall, and the dogs who got it the worst were the dogs who had been vaccinated for kennel cough. Took months to die out. And as others have pointed out, it often gives the dogs kennel cough (though usually not as bad as they'd get it if they picked it up)!

I've only had two dogs showing for months at a time -- neither had kennel cough ever. Their dam who only really went to training class and a friend's house got it bad once. I think I'd err on the side of building a good strong immune system and letting them tackle what hits them until there's reason to believe they can't handle it.
