SOooo Mad!!

I'm sorry if this gets a little long, but I have to vent....
We have had Boomer for 4 weeks now and, naturally, everyone who meets him just falls in love (how could you not??). But I have had a few people ask me how much we gave for him-This just gets on my nerves!!! It's none of their business and I know what alot of their reactions would be if I told them. But we wanted a quality dog and I believe in you get what you pay for.
I guess this all came up again b/c the other night my husband's ex-father-in-law (we still have contact w/them b/c of his kids) came over to bring some of the kid's stuff over and he saw Boomer. He was playing and having a fit over him and the dreaded question came up-I just smiled and went into the kitchen with no intention of answering him, but hubby did and I heard him say "My god, I could have given you a pair of trained bird dogs for that!"
Well, usually I'm pretty good at holding my tongue, but I just couldn't this time and told him if we'd wanted a pair of "trained bird dogs", we still would've gone somewhere reputable! Needless to say, he left pretty quickly and
GOOD RIDDANCE!

Sounds like your FIL is like my dad.....all of our dogs were 'working/herding' dogs growing up....some were even flown in!! My dad scoffed at my boxers and shook his head when i told him we got our rescue for $200....he thought he should have been free! I wanted to mention that i knew several of the dogs we had were well over $1000 AND he had to pay airfare from the midwest in most cases!! People just don't understand.....That should be a bumper sticker...

Hahaha You got that right! The majority of people in the general population just don't "get it"...

I adopted Layla and spent $250 for her, which, frankly, I still don't think was enough!

I have not yet purchased a puppy from a breeder, but do plan to in the future some day (fingers crossed ). And when I do, I fully intend to buy one only from a reputable breeder who does ALL the health testing. I am fully aware of what such a puppy will cost and will not hesitate to spend it. But I KNOW the reaction of my family and strangers will always be the same..."You spentWHAT?!?! :eek: " But I think that will always be a good oportunity to explain the benefits of of buying from a reputable breeder! Of course some (haha, maybe most) people will never get it, but that's just life I guess!

Yeah, its really none of their business. I would just reply with "not enough". They're worth more than we pay for them, no matter what it is. And I agree, If I knew then, what I've learned from Boxerworld, I would've paid alot more for a Health Tested pup. You live and you Learn!!!!

Hard to believe that people can't see beyond 'prices'. My mother ADORES Rocky, but if she knew what I paid for him she would have had a fit! So I told her a much, much, lesser price :D

I plan on buying another boxer baby later on and intend to go to a reputable breeder once again, we do get what we pay for.

I totally agree with this. Bella was £550 ($1,016) but we wouldnt change her for THE WORLD! We got Bella from a reputable breeder who wouldnt sell her to us until she was convinced that she was going to a VERY good home.

People always ask us too! You cant put a price on love, and we love Bella with ALL of our hearts!

Damn I love that saying! . It is VERY true though isn't it! No one seems to understand ANYTHING about Boxers.....from price - to personality.

I get that as well. Although it isn't with Harley. I am always looking at Johnson American Bulldogs, and the breeder I would like to go with charges around $2,000 for a pup. When I tell people this they always respond. "You are crazy for paying that much". That is when I respond "I don't remember asking you to open your wallet and pay for it and until that day comes don't worry about it". They get the hint pretty quick. I know it may sound like a harsh response but if they are so quick to jump in someone elses business then they can handle what I have to say about it.

I understand completely. I try not to tell anyone what I paid. A lot of people I know think you are nuts if you pay ANYTHING for a dog. They tell me you can get free puppies anytime, who cares what kind they are.:rolleyes:
