Lately I have noticed a black tube shaped growth similar to a nipple on the belly of my male boxer. I have noticed that it seems soft and has what appears to be a scab cover the tip of it. While pressing it the scab opened and it started to bleed, it seemed almost like it emptied and then was flat. I was wondering if this is a skin tag. I have done searches on it but have been unable to find a photograph of one.

I have read that they aren't really a problem and quite common in boxers. So if anyone has a website with a photograph of what one looks like I would be grateful...

Thanks ahead of time. :)

With boxers, you never can be too cautious with growths and lumps. My boxer Stormy had some growths similar to how you described (like an extra nipple) and we had them removed a few years ago. We had the tissue biopsied, and one of them was a mast cell tumor. Luckily, we've had no problems with it coming back since.

So, I'd recommend a trip to the vet, just to be safe.

Good luck,

Dana

yucky skin tags

I realize this post is old, but I can offer this...

Mugsy has skin tags all over his belly. Some are black, some are pink. They started to appear around one year of age. I pointed them out to our vet, and he was not alarmed by them. Mugsy has seen several vets and none of them reaceted to the presence of the skin tags, either. They are really ugly, though. If my camera has enough 'juice", I will take a pic to send to you. However, I would agree that having the vet get a look at it is your best bet.

Got a shot of the uglies for you

I have a photo of Mugsy's belly for you. Go to your "user cp" to receive the private message I sent you. Hopefully it will give you some basis for comparison.

My last boxer Maddie got skin tags all over her body too. I always had the vet check them out just to be safe, but they were just harmless skin tags.

Nipples on a male boxer

I have had Max for almost 3 months and love him to death he has been taken to the Vet, nuetered and such and no problems. I have notice that the last set of nipples have dark spots on them. I have had dogs all my life and have never seen this, am I onto something or am I just nuts? Right between the last two nipples is his belly button. So what is going on. Just wanted to know if I am seeing things but he is an 11 month old boxer. Just wanted to know.

Thanks to all.

Both of my boys (almost 3, and 4 and 1/2) have dark tips on a few nipples. Just last night, I had Mugsy's chiropractic vet get a look at his belly to make sure that tags and nipples were ok, and they are. Also, our acupuncture neurologist sees Mugsy's belly every week and has not voiced any concern regarding any of his "stuff" there. Why not call the vet and ask if it is reason for concern? Regardless of whether they console you, or tell you to come in, you will get piece of mind--something which I find absolutely priceless. I too, have always had dogs, but they were all labs or lab mixes. These Boxers have such short hair and you can see so much more, that sometimes I wonder what I may have missed going on under the hair of the my other dogs!
