Xena just turned 1 year Feb. 9, 2001.In the last week she has been under the weather.Frist I noticed she was'nt eating. When she was sleeping next to me I noticed she was really warm, which I did not know what a dogs normal temp. was.She was also sleeping alot. Then when I let her out I noticed her front legs came up and went back donw, next she was donw on the ground on her side with her legs outstraightor stiff.I watch her the rest of the day closely. The next day I went to work worried. When I got home my daughter said she had thrown up twice. I took her to the vet .Her temp. was 104, so she had a fever. The doctor checked her stool said that was fine. He said he would treat her for an infection because of her fever. The next day before I went to work she kept laying on me like she was tring to tell me something. But I went to work anyways. I told my husband to watch her if she starts acting weired call me. I on the other hand worried to much and I could'nt take it no more. I left work and came home and got her and took her back to the vets. While I was in the room waiting for the doctor to come in she had her front paws up on the chair next to me all the sudden she started leaning toard me her eye twitching her body stiff I freaked I laid her down on the floor and screamed for the doctor by the time she got in the room Xena was standing up tring to figure out what had happened. The vet looked in her mouth color was not good. She ran some blood work on her.Her grans, wbc neut, eos, alkp, were slightly high, her chol was 354.7.She said because of some things being high, she wanted to run a liver test which came back normal. so she put her on more antibiotics. She said that because she stiffen out its telling her that its in her nevous system in the brain.I called her breeder to see if there is any of seizure in her histroy. There is no signs in her mom or dad but she said she would do some more research in her back ground, and check out on the pup in her litter. So here I'm just sitting and waiting and watching her. If they could only talk. This broad is great. To be able to talk to someone that understands the crazy love for boxers. I would'nt have any other breed. she is my second boxer, my frist live 11great years. She waiting for me in heaven.

On your home page-type in canine epilepsy. I can't remember the links that I found there, but you can compare signs and symptoms. My Matilda takes epileptic seizures, one time a really scary one where she quit breathing and even lost bladder control. I was scared to death! My vet says that it is inherited in the breed. He showed me a book with six pages of medical problems common to Boxers! He bred and raised Boxers though, so I know that I can trust his judgement. It does sound like Matilda acts after a seizure; the throwing-up, etc. You really should maybe talk to another vet? Did your "kid" look really pale? Matilda loses all color in her normally pink eyes and face. She turns really pale. I'm no vet, but I certainly would keep an eye on that baby!

My vet ran all the blood tests and everything. If it is Epilepsy, it is usually easily controlled with Pheno-barb tablets. Keep a written record of any "attacks". How long they last, and all of the symptoms.

I'm sorry you had to go through that! My Lexus was really sick like that once, I almost lost her. She had started out throwing up alot by the time I got her to the Hospital she was throwing up blood. The next day when I got her to my own vet her temp was so high and she was so weak my dad had to carry her to the car. Couple days later and still with a high fever Lexus had a seizue at the vets. After 5 intense days of a very powerful antibiotics (injected) and alot of worrying, she came through. My vet said Lexus had a bad bacterial infection through out her stomach and intestins. I hope you find all the answers you need and your Boxer live a long healthy life. Good Luck.

Thank you guys for your reply

Xena is doing much better, she starting to act like a puppy again. She is on two Atibiotics-Amoxi,Clindarycin 75.She goes back to the vets on Friday to be check again. The doctor who treated Xena is wonderful. She give me info, if anything went wrong over the weekend and called Monday to see how Xena is doing. She wants to retest her white blood counts to see if any change. She told me that she wants to keep her on this medication for at least two weeks, but could go up to 8 weeks if needed.I really trust her, for her to call to make sure Xena is doing okay is great. This vet that I take her to dose walk-ins, which is wonderful because usally when your babies get sick you we don't have any appointments today.madder of fact the vet that she was going to told me that when I called them when Xena first got sick. So I had to get out the phone book and we found her.We now have a good vet. If she can't take care of the problem she will refer me to someone who can.
Thank you again I will look into what you said.
Xena is doing alot better, has not had anymore seizures. But I will be watching. Yes the vet said her color did'nt look good after she had that seizure in the vet.

I`m sorry to hear about your baby,I had two dogs that had seizures and it`s always scarey,My late Dutch had one when she was 7 and I rushed here to the vet that day she also had one in ithe office while the vet was standing there. They ran tests and she did have a fever, but they told me that almost always the temp goes up afterwards. They gave here antibiotics also, she never had another one and lived to 10 (she died of lymphoma) My late Duke never was sike a day in his life until he had one in the middle of the night,he was 11.The vet told me the same thing about brain/nervous system problems but also mentioned inner ear infections, needless to say I had every test ran I could it showed nothing so I was told it was a wait and see he may never have another.Months went by and he seemed fine a little tired but at his age and having 2 pups (6mo.)running around it was understandable. Then 4mo later he started again his lips were also pale I was told it was most likely a brain tumor or inflamation of the brain which the brain signals don`t tell the body how to utilize oxigen.I was told to take him for a MRI or CAT scan, but the only places near us are in rochester or cornell unfortunatly he didn`t ride well in the car after the seizures it was like he was afraid of heights and motion, finally after phenobarb and other meds I couldn`t watch him suffer. If I had to do it all over again I would have taken him for the CAT&MRI after the first one, your baby is young don`t wait it`s better to know up front what you`re dealing with.Hope it all works out.
