Sick of the Destruction!!

So we're coming up on our first year anniversary at our new home (5/19) and so far things have been absolutely wonderful! We're not in the city anymore, we're in a town with kind of a country-ish setting (if that makes sense). We're not completely out in the sticks, but we're in a somewhat wooded area. We have some wild turkeys (which I've seen) and deer (which I haven't seen yet) that live in the area.

Anyway, I was coming home for my lunch break today and saw a 'land for sale' sign a little down the road from my house on the opposite side of the street. They're selling a 34 acre piece of land to turn into a 14 house sub-division. I'm absolutely furious about this! I know that there has to be room for 'growth' and 'expansion', but I feel so bad for the wild animals that keep getting pushed out of their habitat. There are going to be many wild birds and deer that will be losing 'thier' homes. :(

Over the past couple of years I've really become more environmentally aware and it's really starting to eat me up inside every time I see these 'land for sale' signs. A few towns over used to be considered country with lot of trees when I was a kid growing up (I'm only 26), but now it's all ugly open space with industrial warehouses and drugstores on just about every corner. How many drugstores do we really need on stretch of road anyway? It's just so depressing to see what "we're" doing to this planet. :(

Oh... You sound so like me! (so glad). It bothers me to death???!!! How many of the same stores do we really need? Enough to push animals from their homes and habitats? Isn't it sad??!!!

Not only does all the development in the city bother me, but as someone who grew up "out" in the country I"m tired of people building subdivisions out here. If I wanted a neighbor 2feet away from my house I"d live in the city!! Very frustrating and has definately taken away not only from the beautiful view of our big white farmhouse up on the hill (yes it was breathtakingly beautiful before, like a picture) but geez I dont know where people think they're going to eat from if they keep destroying prime farm land to build houses and developments on. They all want to live out in the country--well hello you're ruining the country by building all your big fancy brick houses, just doesn't quite fit in...argghhh I could go on all day on this topic!!

I grew up in the country out in the middle of nowhere. DH grew up in the city. When we got married and had our first child, we compromised and moved to a small town of 250 people surrounded by country. Last week, a rezoning sign went up in a field close to our house. Needless to say, we will be attending that meeting and complaining!

I know how you feel, but it happens! Around here, we've had a few cougar sightings in town because we're slowly expanding into their territory.

If it makes you feel better, if I remember right, I think the world population (humans) is starting to go down. People are slowly catching on that having 10 kids isn't really a good thing. Not that I have anything against those who do have ten kids or want a big family. I just know that if everyone wanted that, we'd have an even bigger problem on our hands.

Even though it seems like so much of our world is destroyed to make room for us, it's not as bad as it may seem. There's still a lot out there that's untouched and probably won't ever be messed with. And the human race gets smarter every day on ways to conserve our planet, so I'm hopeful that it will get better.

Oh, something that may interest you. There's a series on the Discovery Channel that just started last week. It's called "Planet Earth" and it comes on Sunday evenings. It's an awesome documentary on our planet.... It's great in the fact that it shows us what's still out there that's worth saving.

I feel your pain. We live in the country, our house is 145 years old. When we bought the property (6 acres) there was a parcel of scrub brush beside us that is connected to a large woods. All of the land around us was originally owned by previous owners of our home and was eventually parceled out. When 15 acres went up for sale (included the brush acreage) it was purchased relatively cheaply (but more than we could afford). The people who bought it have since put in a house for them, 2 large barns for their construction business and a house for their son. Mind you, they bought 15 acres but all of the building they have done is practically right on the property line. There used to be foxes raising families in that scrub and they would come to our fruit trees in the winter for food. The deer used to use our field to as a path back to the woods and don't any more although they still feel protected enough in the back of us to bring their fawns around in the spring. Things like this just drive me crazy!!!!!
