I Pray Someone Here Can Help Because I Have A Feeling I Am Running Out Of Time. I Have Had My 9 Year Old Fawn Female Lexus To 4 Vets 3 Of Them Being Specialists At Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists, The Best Our Area Has To Offer. One Was A Emergency Vet The Other An Orthopedic Specialist. No One Can Diagnose What Is Wrong With Her. She Woke Up Saturday Morning 11/15/05 In A Tremendous Amount Of Pain In Her Hips. She Did Not Want To Move, Eat, Drink,or Anything At All. When Trying To Help Her Up She Would Cry Out Very Loud In Very Very Bad Pain. The Night Before Everything Completely Normal. Even Let Her Outside To Go Potty At About 3am As Usual. I Only Let A Couple Of Hours Pass Sturday Morning Before Taking Her To My Regular Vet. He Did A So Called Examination, Took Some Blood, Her Temp. Felt All Of Her Muscles Yanked And Pulled On Her Here And There. Besides Some Very Obvious Pain In Her Hips, He Said All Of Here Vital Signs Were Normal And Said She Probably Strained Her Self Some How. He Gave Me 5 Pills Of Rimadyl And Said He Would Call Me Monday Morning With The Blood Test Results. By Sunday Night We Were Awaken By Her Constant Whimper With Every Breath She Would Exhale. I Checked Her Temp And It Was At 104.0. I Brought Her Straight To The Emergency Vet At About 11:00pm. The Emergency Vet Said That It Would Be Best To Take Some X-rays To See How Everything Looked. After Reviewing The X-rays Everything Looked Normal. Her Heart Is Normal Size, Spine In Good Alignment, In Fact She Said Her Hips Actually Looked Good With No Signs Of Hip Displacia What So Ever. She Then Said She Wanted Me To Come Back In The Morning To See A Specialist Because She Could Not Pinpoint What Could Be Wrong. She Said She Wanted To Wait To See What The Blood Test Results Were Before Going Any Further As Far As Prescribing Her Anything. 8 Hours Later, Monday Morning, I Brought Her Back To The Specialist. He Basically Did The Same Type Of Examination As The Other Two Vets As We Waited For The Blood Test Results To Be Faxed Over From My Regular Vet. The Blood Results Can Back Completely Normal With The Exception Of Her White Blood Cell Count Being A Little High. He Said That It Was Because Of Some Kind Of Inflammation That Was Causing Her Fever. He Also Also Could Not Put His Finger On It. He Asked If I Would Leave Her There So The Orthopedic Specialist Could See Her. So I Did. They Called Me At About 4:00 Pm With The Same Outcome. They Gave Me Two Options 1) An Mri Along With Joint Taps. 2) Treat Her Now As If She Has A Bacterial Infection With Antibiotics And Pain Meds. We Decided To Try The Antibiotics And Pain Meds. We Are Treating Her Now With Rimadyl, tramadol And Cephalexin. After Giving Her A First And Second Dose Her Fever Droped From 104.0 F To 100.7 In Less Than 12 Hours. She Seems To Feel A Little Better But Is Still In A Lot Of Pain. She Will Eat Wet Food Only And Will Drink Water As Long As You Bring It To Her. When I Help Her Get Up To Potty Now She Wants To Try To Get At Something Behind Her. Kind Of Like Chasing Her Tail. She Then Sits Down Very Crooked With Her Ears Tucked Back Looking At Me Like Please Help Me Dad Something Is Wrong With My Backside. I Noticed Her Butt Right Under Her Tail Is Swollen. Her Tail Feels A Little Swollen Also. Both Of These Only Becoming Noticable In The Past Few Hours.has Anyone Experienced Anything Like This? Do You Think I Should Get Her An Mri? Can An Infection Cause Her Hips To Hurt? Please Someone Help Me. I Would Do Anything To Help Her. I Would Pay Any Price. Money Is No Object. I Have Barely Slept At All In The Past 4 Days And Probably Wont Until I Know She Is Ok. She Has Always Been Very Healthy. Her Only Problems Have Been Yeast Infections On Her Paws And In Her Ears. It Is Something She Has Dealt With Her Whole Life Without Any Major Complications. What Happened To Her? Everything Was Fine. How Could Specialists Not Know? Please Someone Help Us!!!!!!!!!

I am so sorry that your baby is sick and in pain--I know how terrible it is to not know how to help.

My dogs haven't encountered the same health problem that your girl is having. One of mine did just have some serious problems and we saw three general practice vets and four specialists--it is so frustrating when even specialists can't tell what is wrong. For your own peace of mind, it may be worth getting a second opinion. Also, if you can easily afford more diagnostic tests/money is no object, it might be worth it. My experience with giving antibiotics and hoping for the best has not been good.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your girl.

Please take a second and post your Introduction. This is required of all new members, and should have actually been your first post ;)

I really wish I had some advice or answers for you-I can feel the desperation in your thread, and it's heartbreaking. Ty and I are sending Lexus TONS of healing vibes and I really do hope that you get some answers soon. I'm sure it's so hard to see your baby in pain. Please keep us updated on Lexus.

Maybe you could do a search on this or talk to your vet to get his/her opinion: Discospondylitis: Infection of the Spinal Vertebrae and Intervertebral Discs.

I don't quite understand what it is exactly, but the symptoms seem to fit.

I hope you find an answer to Lexs' problem. It's horrible when we have to stand by and not know what to do. Hang in there. An answer will be found. Sending ((hugs)) to you and Lexus.

sorry your baby is in pain me and the girls are sending all our love i have never had this with any of my babies but i think you should give the antibiotic a chance if she's started to feel better after taking it give it a little more time since antibiotics doesn't really start giving a good effect except after maybe 3 days and if you don't feel comfortable with the opinions you got from the vets so far go for another opion maybe someone will know what is wrong with your baby hope she gets well soon
