Boxer Pal
we would like your opinions on getting a second boxer.
our situation is this -

Linda has just changed job and is now on straight day shift which means we are both out 8hrs a day. we have someone come in and walk Kea for about 1hr every day and she gets a visit from her gran every other afternoon. I always wanted 2 Boxers, but would it be right to get another when we're not in all day? I keep saying they would keep each other company and they would be happier than on their own but most people say it would be wrong to have another. The breeder is having a litter in april (ready to come home July)
Kea is 1yr old tomorrow. Whats your opinion?

Thanks

I think having a second boxer would be wonderful for your girl. I had my miniature dachshund for 2 years before I got Beau. I don't think Bailey could ever go back to being an only dog. It is so wonderful to have a full-time playmate. They are crated when I'm gone during the day, but I think it is very comforting for them to have their crates side by side. Bailey used to have severe separation anxiety when he had to stay home alone, but that has disappeared since I got Beau. Only one word of warning: make sure Kea likes other dogs (puppies) before you spring one on her. My boys HATED each other when I first brought Beau home. After lots of coaxing, they became the best of friends! Good luck!

I'd say got for it!! 2 Boxers are a lot of fun...a puppy is fine if you have someone willing to let it out. Maybe consider a rescue. Lots of wonderful Boxers available in rescue. Both of my Boxers, and my Dane are all rescues.

I think a new addition would be good for your current Boxer baby. Someone to play with!

I was thinking about exactly the same thing lately, and didn't know if it would be a good idea to add another boxer to my family. Now I've read some of the answers here and I'm going to think about it even more! :) I really want another boxer in my house... You could never get enough of them!

You aren't seriously asking this question to all of us boxer nuts foolicon and expect anyone to say "oh no, one is good". I think you are doing all the right things by having someone come in during the day. A young pup will probably need visits more frequently (like twice during the time while you are both out - depending on the age of the pup when you bring him or her home) maybe you can talk gran into to coming daily until the pup is a bit older (if your heart is set on a puppy).

I also agree to check rescues as an option, ours is a rescue and he was just over one year old when we got him and he was completely housebroken, didn't chew/shred anything and could be left alone in the house and not destroy anything. It did take about 2 weeks before him and my other dog became buddies, but that was much easier then potty training and all of that other fun puppy stuff that can last several months to several years!

Our next boxer will be a puppy when the time comes, but when we got our rescue an older dog fit our lifestyle better at the time then a puppy would.

Good luck to you and let us know when your new little bundle of joy arrives!!

Definately!!!! When we got our 2nd boxer we wondered why we hadn't done it earlier because they had so much fun playing together, and when I see them curled up on the sofa together my heart just melts.

2 is definately better than 1!
