Should I even bother planting grass?

Boxer Yard

Well, I have 2 boxers of my own, Joe and Charlie, and our yard too looks like a pack of bears has run through it. I live in IL and we just had our first snow melt today in almost 2 months, so Im sure you all can only IMAGINE what my yard looks like. I came home at lunch and had this brilliant idea of hosing down the waste. BAD IDEA. The waste is gone, but now there is brown snow everywhere. It just looks awful. We were giving them anti lawn burning treats last year and they did seem to help, but they are pricey. I also re-seeded the yard last fall and Charlie the digger just made it worse. I am 6 months pregnant now and plan to reseed the lawn once Spring hits, but I am not looking forward to walking the dogs 30 times a day with a baby while the new grass grows. UGHHHHH!!!!:mad:

To keep this thread updated, since my last post where I was full of glee and had a gorgeous green yard - it was ruined:rolleyes: and then I put in another yard of the same, st. augustine (sturdy, wide blade, popular in FL) in November and it is gone now too.


:( The grass isn't seeming to work.

Now I want to try the Tuff stuff! Am also going to research those mats.

You've given me hope to try once again. I think I will get some of this Tuff Stuff. I only have 1 boxer and 1 boston terrier. Sometimes I think that makes it worse. The boston can turn tighter corners and make more fly! I will, of course, have to wait until I can find the back yard again. I haven't seen bare ground here in NW Iowa for a long time:eek:

Thank you so much for this thread. I am in the process of buying a house, mainly for my two babies. And as I found out builders sod the front but not the back. So, I was wondering about the backyard and grass, what I should do.

1) get the builders to sod the back
2) Leave it dirt (which is now sounding appealing)
3) Throw seed and see where that takes me.

I think I will buy the Tuff Stuff seed and see where it takes me first. My babies have been in an apartment all their life. They don't dig when we go to the park or for our walks, so I'm hoping they don't start.

But....I never know

We just bought a house with a boxer and a beagle. They sodded the back yard with Bermuda and it looks fine so far. We moved in in November, so we'll see if it lasts through spring, summer and fall. We over-seeded with winter rye grass in early December since the bermuda didn't have time to take root. You could still see the squares and it was very muddy in between. The winter rye started growing up through the squares covering the mud, and the yard was decently green through winter. The dogs are outside a lot running around being crazy. I really hope the grass will last! Otherwise my husband might win the arguement to put in a pool!

I would go for paving. That way it will never be muddy! Of course it is lovely to have grass but maybe you are just wasting your money as they will just ruin it again?????

I am quite lucky with Bella as she isn't a 'digger'!

We have finally given up on the grass... We decided DECK.. if we deck out most of the yard and turn the side of the house into a dog run then maybe it won't look like we are living in a mud pit... Silly me thought sod was a good idea. It would have been easier to just take that $$$ an flush it.

Our local dog run uses wood chips (mulch)... any ideas about that????

Deck was my thought too, but after spending 14k on our new roof, we're out of the deck idea.

So I was thinking, how about artificial turf? Anyone have ideas on this one?

No grass never has worked for me either. :rolleyes:
Right now the yard is muddy or brown 'grass' (really weeds )
Once spring rolls around though, my yard will be very green. The crabgrass is the only way to go! (for me anyways). It's tough as nails, doesn't rip up easy at all. I know a lot of people hate it... well, it is like heck to pull out of a flower bed, but it is what will always be growing in my backyard. It's very thick, so it does help keep their feet cleaner.

that tuff stuff grass sounds like the answer.
in am in need of grass at my place....my two babies tear up our yard...sometimes the mud is just too much! nothing like wiping of 8 grimy paws (and under nails...don't forget) everytime they come in. and it seems just as you get them in and cleaned, POOF! they want to go out again! go figure.
so tuff stuff? i think i wil have to get me some of that!
