Should I even bother planting grass?

This is my first time with two boxers. They love to chase eachother all over the yard, but now it is literally mud and very unsightly. I also have two young boys. I thought about temporarily fencing the grassy area, having it re-seeded, and then taking away the temporary fence when it is established. The pups would still have the long driveway area and a large mulched area by the swingset to play and run around in. Am I wasting my time? Will they just rip it up? There was not alot of good grass this year when we got the dogs. My yard looks horrible right now, but perhaps this is as good as it gets?????

I also have two Boxers and no grass but lots of mud. My girls also like to dig big holes everywhere - it is awful. I am considering putting rocks/gravel down in my yard to be done with this problem once and for all.

I don't know which will look worse - the mud or the rocks but at least the rocks will be cleaner.

I'm in the same boat. When we had our 2 weeks of blissful spring temps earlier last month, our lawn was basically turned into a mud pit thanks to Lara and Wilson. :rolleyes: What can I possibly do about it other than shrug my shoulders and transplant any plants from the back to the front? I learned last year to forget about making the back yard pretty, and do all of my gardening in the front and side of the house!

I agree - don't bother with grass!

We had our garden landscaped last year and had new turf laid, it looked so beautiful. Tommy and Billy were not allowed out there and it was lovely - until we let them back in. It's not so much the running around and turning it to mud - but the urine burns. Now it's a green/yellow/brown and black wasteland!

I'm about to give up on grass, too! My two *girls* have worn a path from one side of the house to the other, so I have put in stepping stones, and flat rocks along their path. That has helped, but they still like to dig in certain areas. I guess I'll just have to fill in the holes with soil and plant grass seed and hope for the best. I put down sod last year, and it all died!! I kept it watered--don't know what happened. *Sigh*

I only have one, and my yard looks like a battle field. Holes (trenches), ripped up stuffed animals, heads, arms, torso's... it's really bad. The grass is awful too. I'd say don't bother. Saves water too. I don't know if you are in a drought, but we are... so I think this summer I'll just let it die!

Well I have two boxers and my backyard looks like a moonscape presently! I really have given up - I just put bricks in the worst holes and where they done their 'burns' around the camellia tree and kowhai tree I just tend not to look anymore!

Don't mean to depress you, but that seems to be the reality with two boxers and grass! :D

LOL... no grass here either, but my yard isn't too bare, it's really thick with all sorts of weeds and crabgrass, it doesn't look too bad if kept short. Although it needs to been cut often. Grows like a weed! hehe :p Tried planting real grass a few times, never worked, the weeds and crabgrass are here to stay. Better than mud I guess! :p

I have about a third of my back yard in gravel...under the deck, out around my big tree and swimming pool ( above ground). I have a row of bushes planted along the side of the chain link open to the neighbors. I have mulch down there. No mud.

I'd be tempted to fence off the unplanted areas and seed them. Good luck!!
