Hi I know that its said good breeders do not allow there puppys to leave the mother so soon. However I have done searche and found everyone has different opinions. Some say that it is fine and others say no. I talked to the breeder yestrday and shes letting the puppys go to there new homes at 5 weeks. My sister in law are both getting a puppy from her. Now my concern comes in with our puppies. I have to drive 7 hours or so one way and plan on staying in a pet friendly hotel for the night and drive home another 7 hours with 2 puppys at 5 weeks old. So I was thinking of taking a small crate so the 2 can be next to eachother during the ride. I also thought that being my sister in law and I live right down the street from one another that it would be a good ideal to keep them together for a couple weeks. So that our babies can learn socialization and the puppy nipping which I know "Hurts" so I am hoping they can learn from eachother at least. I was very prepared but now I am not feeling so prepared knowing she will only be 5 weeks old. So do you think it will be a good ideal if my sister in law brings her girl down everday so they can be together or should we just keep them in one house together for a couple weeks?

ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

Why on earth would she let them go at 5 short weeks? People have different opinions at 7 weeks versus 8 weeks, but never at 5 weeks. In some states, it is actually illegal to let the pups go home that soon.

Is she providing you with copies of all health testing done on parents (more information can be found at www.boxerworld.com/health_testing)? If not, I would walk away -- fast! Letting the pups go home so early is a huge red flag, in my opinion.

Well my honest opinoin, whether you want to hear it or not, would be not to support a breeder who would sell puppies at 5 weeks old. To me that is absolutely recdiculous and I would really look into this breeder. I HIGHLY doubt she has performed any health testing on her dogs and is breeding them for profit. Responsible and ethical breeders do not sell their puppies at 5 weeks old. I have seen very few sell them at 7+ but never before then and in some states it's even against the law to sell them that young, if that gives you any indication as to how serious it should be taken. The only reason the "breeder" is doing that would be to make money and doesn't want to invest any more than she has to to feed and care for them for the remaining three weeks. I do wish you the best of luck with your puppy, but I wouldn't buy from someone who would do that if it was me. I can't tell you what to do with a 5 week old puppy because I didn't get mine until he was 8 weeks old. Even if something happened to the mother, it seems very suspect that a responsible breeder would sell the babies that young, I just don't see it happening. I hope everything turns out okay for both you and the puppies.

that is o so young. Is there a reason the breeder is sending them out so early? I know a couple of members here on BW have taken pups because the mom isnt caring for them. But I agree that is way too early. Please look for more info before taking the pups home.

Best wishes.

You know, there are good reasons why animal welfare legislation (in many countries, and quite a few US states) makes it illegal to sell a puppy before 8 weeks. And it's all to do with animal welfare, not because some people thought it would be fun.

To answer your actual question though, if you do buy these puppies from this BYB, I do not think it is a good idea to separate them until they're a minimum of 7 weeks old. They are too young to be leaving their mother and littermates, why make it worse by separating the two of them?

I did email her and am waiting for a response as to the reason why. I will ask her if she could keep our for at least another couple weeks. We did give her deposits already. I know it is not right at all Gosh it is hard to find "good breeders" anymore. The 1st time I spoke to her she said the parents did have all the health tests done. I really like our 1st phone conversation. Thats why I choose her. I do think it would be the best ideal to keep them together. I searched on here for other post like mine and people who took there pups home at 5 1/2 weeks 6 weeks said evrything was fine. Thanks for the input.

Everything might have turned out fine for many people who unknowingly took their pups home too soon. However, you are now educated that 5 weeks is FAR too soon to seperate puppies from their mother and littermates. You should not allow this to happen. 3 more weeks is not too much to ask even a BYB.

There are psychological and behaviorial consequences associated with taking the puppy too soon. Do some research on that before you decide to take these puppies at 5 weeks.

The thing is, even if she agrees to keep the pups from the 5th week to the 8th week, the fact that she'd even CONSIDER letting them go at 5 weeks probably means she's done 100 other things wrong that will be a bad influence on those puppies. From breeding unstable/unhealthy parents, to not socializing them, etc.

If she doesn't want to be bothered FEEDING the pups once they're weaned, do you honestly think she'll be handling them and introducing them to various surfaces and sounds and experiences to make their transition into the bigger world easier?

Not to mention that if their mother was similarly taken from HER litter at 5 weeks old she may not be particularly good at teaching them what she never learned herself.

There's so much more to breeding than putting fertile animals together and providing the bitch a spot in which to have puppies, then cashing the checks for the puppies a few weeks later.

You're looking at entering into a 10-12 year commitment. Don't make a rash, sentimental decision that you'll regret.

Just because you said all health testing was done doesn't mean it actually was. I would ask for proof of the tests done and then still run.

My father has been helping me in looking for breeders and since I am in Wisconsin I have been looking at Michigan breeders also and their are quite a few I want to talk to further. Contact a local club and get some recommendations for reputable breeders.

We are getting our puppies this Saturday, they will be 7.5 weeks. Our breeder would of never allowed us to take a pup so young, and Im glad. She normally waits until 8 weeks. We are getting them a few days before 8 weeks only because unfortunately thier mom pup was killed by a car, they have been weaned, and they have been checked by the vet and deamed healthy. I also have off for the 5 days following which gives me more time to get them adjusted.

I totally agree with everyone here, 5 weeks is way too soon. I would of loved to have our pups early, but I know it would not have been wise for them, and would not have taken them anyway. We had the privledge of visiting them 2x's a week though, so that was nice.

Good luck

Angie
