She is climbing the fence!

So our boxer Katie has recently decided that climbing our chain link fence is good fun. She had been doing it for a while along our back fence because there was a pole missing but we had piled a ton of limbs there to keep her from doing it and that worked. Now she is climbing the gate. The good news is we have 2 gates and the second is a wooden 6 foot so she can't climb that one...however we had a small hole in the privacy fence that she wouldn't have fit through...except I think she tried to and apparently the fence is rotting and she broke through. She didn't go anywhere. My husband saw her from the window after the other 2 dogs were barking at her and as soon as I opened the door and called her in she came running but the problem is she now has 2 cuts (very small and we are keeping them clean.) I don't want her to hurt herself and I really don't know what to do. I can't be outside with her every second and she really enjoys playing with the neighbors dog. We are saving up to get a privacy fence all the way around (which will make me and the neighbor's dog, Sam, sad because they won't be able to lick each other...maybe we can cut a hole out for that purpose...there would still be chain link fence there) but we don't have the money up yet. I guess my question is...does anyone else have climbing boxers and what did you do about it?

They are MANY climbers out here! Joey can and will climb if given the opportunity. We have a wire type "lip" that comes out at an angle from the top of our (6ft) chain link fenced in play area. It is about 1 1/2 feet wide and when he jumps up his head will touch this "lip" and he knows he cant get around it. You can get the parts at at most hardware stores. Sorry I know my discription isnt very well but I have no idea what it is called.

When I first brought my older dog home, at the age of eight weeks, he scaled the four foot high puppy pen! We decided to train them on invisible fence which works beautifully. If your dog is alone, make sure his collar can not catch on the fence. I have two friends on separate occassions, that came home to tragedies! Be careful.

Thanks...

None of our dogs are outside alone when we are not home...but I am glad you pointed this out...you never know what could happen! However, recently I discovered that Katie is not climbing the fence...she is flying over it!! I thought if I went out with her she would not 'climb' because I was watching her...boy was I wrong. Except she didn't climb it...she ran full speed and leapt over it. So we have no choice but to get a privacy/six foot wooden fence...which we can't afford yet. We were thinking about a short term solution of a chain so she can't reach the fence...but she will not do her business when we have her on the leash (she does potty and then wants to come in where she promptly leaves us a gift on the floor!) Plus she about pulls my arm out of my socket trying to get over to that fence and I can barely hold on to her. In the evening/on the weekends my husband takes her out but he leaves for work so early that I take her out in the mornings and it is such a struggle. Does anyone have any success stories using chains on their boxers...again, it will be a short term solution...

I often thought about adding an electric fence just outside a barrier type fence. When they get very close to the fence, it would go off. Wonder if that would eliminate the urge to jump it? Or is the price comparable to replacing the fence to a higher one? Just my mind at work again. Usually useless thoughts, but atleast it still works! LOL
