scared about tumor

I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of tumors in dogs. We found one last week in Libby, and we had it removed. We had it sent off to the lab to verify if it was benign or malignant. My vet, who also has boxers, told me that boxers are "tumor factories". Have the rest of you heard similar things? Are these tumors usually cancerous? My concern is that Libby is not even two yet. If these tumors are already forming, I'm unsure of the quality of life she'll have.

I would appreciate any information - as most of you know, my husband and I have not been able to have children so far, so our Libby is our baby. Any advice would help.

Boxers are very pron to skin problems. And alligerys (sp). Duke used to get bumps all the time. Come to find out it was the food that we was giving him (Pro Plan Beef and Rice) we switched to Nutro and the bumps have gone away... He does have alligerys, but there are no bumps. I hope that everything comes back ok for you.

I do not know much about tumors so I cannot help you. BUT, I can send positive thoughts and prayers for Libbys quick recovery.

Boxers are prone to tumors but not all are cancerous. We have had several tumors removed from Baxter a few benign but several malignant. So far all his margins have come back clear from pathology which has not resulted in us having to do anything more than watch him closely. The sooner you have them removed the better off you are and the better your chances that they have not metastasized yet. Hugs to you and Libby. It is scary, I know. Yes, boxers are suceptible(sp) to cysts. Tess has had several, the last one being removed 12 days ago. It was benign thank goodness. Try not to worry too much but even if it is malignant (85% are benign), it can be treated if caught early enough. Our thoughts are with you.

antioxidants promote good health

i hear you...my cola is only 4 months old and i panicked when she had a little bump on her shoulder blade. i wrote in about it because i feared it was a tumor but thank God - it was only a hair bump or possibly a mosquito bite. however during my inquiry i mentioned that i work in the medical field and how they are always talking about high levels of antioxidants in our diets which help promote a better immune system and can protect against certain cancers in humans. antioxidants are found in vitamin e, vitamin b-12, tomatos, blueberries and other citrus fruits. i always give cola tomatos and give her alpo "healthy treats" which contain 11 vitamins and minerals....i also read her puppy chow. i know alot of people give their dog iams or nutro etc but puppy chow has lots of the vitamins i mentioned and protein for healthy muscle and skin. which ever food you choose just make sure it contains those essential nutrients. i got a good response from another boxer board member saying he/she also read an article supporting what i wrote. just and F.Y.I. please do your own research and keep the faith...a little prayer always helps!!!

We found a tumor on Brutus when he was 5 months old. The vet had it removed and he was fine. He had another growth removed a few months ago...again he is now fine.

I know it can be scary but the usual course of action is to remove the tumor and go on. That usually solves any problems in yonger dogs.

Buster Baby had a tumor by his left eye. It got really, really big--burst at the groomers and he had to have stitches. I was freaking out as well because he was only a year and six months old. Our vet said that the boxer was extremely prone to tumors. Buster's tumor was benign and he is happy and healthy and he has had no more signs of tumors.

Just this last week- Bodhi, our 8 year old male had a mast-cell tumor removed from the back of his left rear leg. We've had the skin tumor sent for a pathological test, and are still awaiting the news. We treated the offending mass within 1 week of appearing, hopefully bettering our chances of catching it early! I wish you luck with this situation, please have them asperate the mass at your vet clinic immediately to find out if it is cancerous! Please keep us posted on any new events.

My Biscuit had cancer starting when she was age 4. And she lived and happily so for another 10 years. We did have to have some of the tumors removed from time to time. The vet said that I could put her on chemotherapy but he thought that would be harder on her than the cancer. I am glad I listened to him because like I said she lived a full and happy life. 14 is VERY old for a boxer and I miss her terribly even though it has been two years. So, just be sure you have a good repore with your vet. If the tumors are not internal you Boxer should live a great life. Especialy if it is as spoiled as I am thinking it is.......hehehehe. And dont feel silly about it either, the boxer I have now is the most rotten dog on the planet! shhhhhhhhhhh dont tell her that she is a dog, it offend her greatly!
