Riggodunick, So glad to hear that Riggo is holding his own. Still haven't been able to PM you - click on your own profile and you will see. With re: to your other question, I've been PM this woman since she sent condolences on BoxerBooster after the passing of our beloved 7 year old boxer. Hope Riggo continues to improve, and that you will keep us posted - Cathy

Riggo had his second chemo treatment Friday (Elspar) and has been doing very well. Close to what he was before we diagnosed him, running around the back yard with his big red ball in his mouth and actually whining for attention and playtime. It has been a long time since he whined like that so I guess he's getting back to normal.

One bad side effect that he has had is diarhea. He's on medication and I've started feeding him cheese to help bind him up but it doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

lasalot,

I just double checked my options and I did not have private messaging enabled. I did have 'receive email from other members' enabled and thought that would take care of private messages also but I guess I was wrong. I would still like to get a hold of that email address we spoke about a few days ago.

Good to hear Riggo is feeling so chipper. Must be great to see him acting normal. As for the loose stools, boiled chicken and rice work well.

Keep us posted on Riggo's progress.

Riggodunick,

Thanks so much for the update on Riggo. I am so glad that he is doing fairly well. I only wish that I could post that e-mail address (again), but it is not permissable. Too bad you didn't copy and save when it appeared the first time, although briefly. You can sign up for Boxer Boosters at the Northeastern Boxer Rescue site - that is where I first learned of Terry and her dog Cole. You can check out the archives and/or post a new message - I'm sure she will respond. Hope this helps - Cathy

Lafsalot,

Thanks for the info. I checked out their site and sent an email to the administrator as I couldn't find the archives. If you could email somehow with the address that would be great too.

Thanks,
Walt

I took Riggo to a very good oncologist in West Chester, PA yesterday for an exam. She told me that Riggo had acute not chronic leukemia as my regular vet had told me. She also said that the drugs they were giving him were for a lymphoma treatment. She took a look at his bone marrow yesterday and said that it actually looked pretty good. Some of that of course due to the treatments he's already received I'm sure.

The oncologist said that with his bone marrow looking good he had lots of room to grow new cells but that she would treat him very aggressively and thinks that he would respond well because of the good shape his bone marrow is in. She would hospitalize him for 5 days, then treat him on 2 cycles for a total of 3 months of therapy and then he'ld be finished unless he relapses. If he responds to the therapy she believed that we'ld get at least a year of good quality life and possibly more.

She said that she is still treating a dog that started on 9-11 that had the same diagnosis as riggo; acute leukemia with hypercalcemia with much worse looking bone marrow.

This is such a hard decision what to do.

My heart goe out to you - I know that you are feeling overwhelmed right now (and rightfully so), and only wish there was more that I could do for you. Here is an excellent web site where you can find other pet owners going through similar situations: http://cancerfiles.smallpawsrescue.org/#homepages Hope this helps, and do keep us posted - Cathy

Boxer Buddy
Riggo Vet

I just wanted to, first of all, say how sorry I am to hear about Riggo and his diagnosis. I just wanted to send a quick note about the veterinary oncologist that I think you're seeing. There's only one onco.vet. that I know of in West Chester, PA, and she is absolutely excellent. I have had both of my dogs treated by her for mast cell tumors. The first day I brought my puppy to her for assessment/staging of his mast cell tumor, I met a woman whose dog had been being treated for 3 years for lymphoma by this doctor. The dog continued to do very well. I was very surprised and heartened to hear this. I had never heard of a dog surviving so long with that disease. I since did some research on this vet. and realized that she has patented monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of lymphoma and has done extensive research on familial breed lines and lymphoma incidence. She is really very well-respected and has an absolutely superb track record of lymphoma and related cancers such as leukemia. You are in great hands. My own dogs continue to do well one year post-treatment for their mast cell tumors (fingers crossed). One had radiation for a month (every day) and the other just surgery (different grade tumors and anatomic locations).

Just thought I'd pass along my two cents. You should feel very encouraged that you found this doctor. I wish you and your dog the very best.
