Riggo's Owner

I started a new thread with regards to canine hypercalcemia - check it out and see if the drugs I suggested might help poor Riggo. We are all anxiously waiting for the daily update, and hope that it brings better news. Still in my thoughts and prayers - Cathy

ColormeCodey,

I'm sorry to hear that your boxer only lasted one month after chemo started.
If Riggo could not stand anymore I would probably do the same.

I started Riggo on chemo because the vet said that 75% of animals can have a good quality of life for up to a year or so and of course there are miraculous animals who last longer.

He had his first chemo treatment on Friday. He was given adriamycin (20 mg). Friday night he was terriffic. Tons of energy running around the back yard with his ball in his mouth just like always. Since then it seems like it has been mild swings. At times he looks dead to the world. Laying down and barely responding to me. Other times very happy and lots of energy.

The vet said that energy and mood swings are normal. This is extremely tough on me, every time his energy is down I begin wondering.

For others who have done chemo are energy and responsiveness swings normal? I would not want to keep him suffering but if I could get 9-10 months of good quality of life with him I would think that I did the right thing.

lafsalot (Cathy),

I was sorry to hear that you also have hypercalcemia. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It must have been extremely tough watching seeing your boxer with lymphoma.

By the way I have been a little confused with terminology. Lymphoma I thought was a generalized term for any kind of cancer with the lymphatic system correct? The leukemia Riggo has is a type of lymphatic disease right?
Is Lympoma then a type of lympatic diesaes in itself? have I confused the generalized term with the more specific type of disease? Am I making sesne?

MamaZookeeper,

Thanks for the kind words and I'll work on getting a picture up of him. He really is a terriffic, playful loving boxer and it will be devastating to me when his time comes.

I did get some inspiration from the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in Emmitsburg MD last night and prayed to St. Francis for him. There should be a candle lit in his name this week. I asked for healing graces for Riggo and the courage to know when to let go.

Labor Day,

Riggo had a really good night and morning. It is the most responsive and alert that I've seen him in the morning in weeks. He really does look good and is very playful. One bad thing that I have noticed and plan to call the vet about is that he has had 3 diarhea dumps and he has been occasionally making these really horrible noises from his throat almost like dry heaves or something. He has done this in the past before I knew about his leukemia but not as frequently.

Any comments or advice is always helpful.

Cancer/Chemo e-mail buddy

riggodunick - sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Don't know if this is permissable, but you need to get some positive feedback with regards to chemo and think you should talk to that woman I was telling you about. Her name is Terry and her boxer furbaby is Cole. and you can e-mail her at xxxxxxxxxxx. She consoled me after the loss of my boxer;congratulated me on my new one; and I have subsequently asked and received updates about Cole. Hang in there - Cathy

Sorry!

Riggodunick, please accept my apology, I didnt mean to be negative at a time like this. My boxer had an advanced form of cancer by the time it was diagnosed and we were told by our vet going in that the chemo would only make her last maybe another 3-6 months. I was going to take anything I could get. The chemo didnt work on Cody but I have heard very promising things about chemo and that it does work on alot of dogs. Cody did have the diahrrea and she was very alert most times, it was just that she couldnt stand or eat because the cancer had taken so much of her energy. I wish you all the best with your chemo and I truly hope it works well! Kim
