Good Morning,

I first want to say "THANK YOU" so much for all the helpful information found here in the forum and on this website. This is the first place I look for information on the newest addition to our family.

Bella came to us about a week ago and she is 9 weeks old. I wish I could say that our story begins with such happiness but unfortunately it hasn't been. My 6 year old and I have been waiting for Bella for almost a month, but when we finally got to see her, we were horrified to see the terrible shape she was in. A friend had gone to get her and couldn't leave her in that environment. He brought her home and tried to nurse her back to health...he didn't want us to bring her home because he feared my son wouldn't be able to handle a possible loss of the puppy.

Bella was 7 weeks old when she was taken from her mother. I believe she may have been the runt of the litter and was not given enough attention. She was very thin....let me say that again....VERY THIN...She weighed about 5lbs. My friend took her to the vet and was told that she had hookworms and this was the reason she wasn't eating. A few days went by and her appetite started to pick up just a little but then she started to get worse again. After a week, she was taken to the vet again...found she was severly dehydrated...weight went to only 2.7 lbs...tried to put an IV but she freaked out so they sent her home.

This is when I finally stepped in. I guess my motherly instincts kicked in and I brought her home to nurse her back to health. I took her to my trusted vet and she was able to find not one but two instestinal parasites along with a skin infection.

For a week now, Bella gets three types of medicine and is force-fed water or Pedialyte. She is still very weak but she is eating now. Just this morning, she ate about 3 big teaspoons of food with some nutri-cal added to it. I know 3 teaspoons doesn't sound like alot but for us its a big improvement. I am still giving her about a cup of Pedialyte or water a day. You can still see every bone in her body, but its not as bad as a week ago.

Although I have found some great info on here, I think I need some reassurance on a few things:

1. How long will it take before she is hydrated enough that I don't have to hand feed her water?
2. How long before she starts to fill out and start eating the normal amount of food for her age?
3. All she does is sleep. She gets up, goes potty, eats and then goes right back to sleep. We take her outside to get her to walk around...get some exercise but after a few minutes, she seems very tired and sits down and won't move until we go get her.

She is so much better than just a week ago! We call her our miracle baby! Call me anxious, but I just want her healthy and as a normal, playful, feisty puppy!

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Bless your heart - it sounds like you are winning the battle for little Bella. Re: your questions, not sure about 1 or 2 but for 3 this is how things need to be right now. Because her body is so tiny and she is getting so little into her system she does not have a lot of energy and strength. Also, she needs that rest to get stronger to eat and drink more on her own a little later. Keep up the great work. Hugs to you and Bella :)

Poor Bella I hope she get better soon. Well im not an expert on this but 5 lbs at 7 weeks sounds normal to me but less than 3 lbs is a little disturbing. Anyway you mentioned the she's taking atleast 3 types of medicine which means the vet think she's in good enough health to stay at your house.

As far as eating most puppies differ on this area. Some can eat like a mule while others would barely touch their food but as long as they are eating I wouldn't worry about it too much. Nitro at that age don't eat as much as i expect a puppy of his age but know he'll eat his food like there's no tomorrow lol.

As far as sleeping a lot well what do you expect she's still a puppy just wait for few more weeks and you'll wish that she still sleeps a lot lol. I remember when Nitro was about 9 weeks old that's all he does all day. He'll play with me for 5 minutes then go to sleep for 30 minutes, wake up & potty, play for 5 minutes, go to sleep, then potty lol.

Just keep up with the medicine and the pedialite and she'll be fine. Also have you ever tried Rebound that's what my vet gave Nitro when he became dehydrated when he was young. If im not mistaken it's either beef or chicken flavor and i normally just leave it in his bowl so he can drink it anytime he wants. Well good luck with baby Bella I hope she get better soon.

Good Morning!

Thank you for the responses! Yesterday was a great day for Bella! She was such a piggie! She ate about five times and the spoonfuls have increased. It was great to see her so feisty...screaming at me to hurry up and give her some food!

My father is her patient babysitter while I am at work and he called to tell me that "Your baby is eating everything in the house!"

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for the well-wishes and all the encouragement that she is on the right track to getting better!

Ohh, I hope your little Bella grows stronger! Chloe is 12 weeks - but at 9 weeks she slept a tone too; so don't worry about the over-sleeping.

Before we found our little Chloe, we were going to get another puppy - we named her Lola - and she was just 1.65 lbs at 6.5 weeks... She got a virus from her mother's milk - and we weren't allowed to see her. Her breeders were the worst people on earth - and witha sad heart we walked away... But I just wanted to tell you that when Lola was so small a lot of people said that she still had a chance. When we saw her at 6.5 weeks - she couldn't support herself nor walk on her legs... in retrospect, it was very sad. So, if Bella is walking and eating, and going potty - you guys are on the right track! Enjoy your little baby (while she's light enough to pick up!)

Congrats on the great news for Bella! I wouldn't worry about the sleeping too much; even Holly slept a lot the first few weeks she came here and she was in perfect health. Little puppies just need to sleep so much because they are growing; and also, that's when the body heals the most. sleepicon

When Sophie, my cat, was little, she was very sick when she first came to live with me. I made her homemade chicken soup and fed her the broth while I was nursing her back to health. It was the first thing she ate on her way to recovery.

Bella's Update

Good Afternoon!

Sorry for not updating on Bella! I am happy to report that my little fat girl is doing great! We have had Bella for a month now and her last check up showed that she is completely free of any parasites!!! YEAH!!!

I took her to the vet this past Tuesday and she gained 5lbs in two weeks. So at 12 weeks, she is a wopping 8.4 lbs! Doesn't sound like much, but for us, she's perfect! She looks and acts like a puppy! Her personality is starting to shine and she is a great source of entertainment.

Her favorite thing to do is chase after my six year old to steal his socks. She will pull them right off of his feet! She went trick-or-treating in her devil costume with all the kids, but gave up the long walk half way thru. Don't worry...there were plenty of people with us who were more than happy to carry her!

I will post pics soon!

I do believe that Bella is a miracle if she was as sick and tiny as you say. You are to be praised for hanging in there and not giving up on her, I believe that everyone on this board would do the same thing for their babies. I am so glad that Bella is doing so well, she may be on small side now but just wait they grow sooooo fast. Can't wait to see pics of her, please post some asap.
