Sounds pretty similar

Joe getting aggressive in those situations may be due to barrier aggresion (sometimes called leash aggression). ...He's pretty good most of the time, but every once in a while, for no "apparent" reason (there's always a reason, we just don't have the same level of senses he does!

Pretty interesting. He was leashed on my back porch last night and tried to bite my neighbor who was coming up to say 'hi'. I was standing right there, he gave no warning, no hair bristling, just made an angry grunt and out went the teeth, i placed my hand inbetween her hand and his mouth and he got me instead, promptly cowered as if to say, "i'm so sorry, didn't mean to get you." and looked pretty much embarassed and apologetic. I scolded with a no bite asked my neighbor if she'd be willing to try again and he was OK with an open hand, under the nose food offering and a pat from her. I gave big praise and watched him carefully while I chatted.

I guess it's just scary. I am expediting getting him altered and definitely agree that socialization is the key...however, he is a huge liability in a city as I never know what might trigger him to snap. I'm thinking some sort of soft muzzle in public areas would be the safest...maybe...i will take these thoughts to another forum and am currently searching for the 'aggression' threads for any and all helpful info.

Once again. Thank you all for your support. I am adding 2 new photos right now.

Hello!! Just caught onto this thread and I have to say you are an inspiration for having rescued this boxer baby! Joe definitely had an angel looking out for him when you came into his life! Congratulations! I am sorry to hear about his children and dog issues. Perhaps some of his scars were learning experiences at the hands of kids or other dogs. I wish he could unload all that baggage, but I think it is awsome that you are loving him flaws and all. Good luck!

Great Dog!

When it comes down to it. Joe is a loving, EXTREMELY well mannered (indoors and/or outside not around people) dog. He's got a million expressions and is so communicative and i can't imagine life without him.

I am concerned about his aggression issues but it just means i need to be more attentive to his needs while outside or around others until i figure out what's going on and how to address it. In the end...he'll feel better and so will I.

Kitty Dinner

For those of you with Feline friends, I am so sorry.

So I am taking joe for a walk yesterday and he is snooping around in some over grown bushes all of a sudden i hear brush rattling a growly bite noise and an odd animal noise I immediately pulled Joe out of the bushes...all of this happened in a flash. Joe had grabbed and shaken the life out of a small black cat. I felt HORRIBLE. I've seen the alley cat occassionally in the lots snooping around didn't think much of it. I never would've let Joe get close to it if I would've known it was in there. I wish it would've run away.

My question is: Joe broke the cat's skin with his bite and had blood in his mouth and on his face. Should i be taking him to the vet? Can the blood make him ill?

Thank you so much for rescuing Joe. He's a very handsome guy!

Regarding tough toys, Petsmart recently started carrying a line of toys made from RED nylon like material. I could not find them on their website. They come with a yellow ribbon on them that says gauranteed indestructible. Well, I bought two of them, a football and a gingerbread man. The football bit the dust in a matter of minutes, so since it was gauranteed, I took it back. They gave me my money back with no questions. I picked up another gingerbread man shaped one and they are both "alive and well" in my house weeks later.

Ginger and Booker are serious chewers and also play tug of war with them regularly and they're holding up great. The football had a lot of seams, and I think that was it's demise, but the little man figures are great.

Good luck with Joe Boxer!

Oh Oh I found them online: http://www.hobokenfishandpets.com/Hobokenfishandpets.com - Squeaker Dog Toy.htm

They say they have squeekies, and they do, but my dogs cannot squeek them. The material is very tough to squeeze. But they like them anyway.

This is the one that didn't last more than a few minutes:

Oh my! I just read the 2nd page of this thread. Sorry to hear about the aggression issues. I would seek the advice of a good dog behaviorist.

The blood from the cat shouldn't hurt Joe. How sad for the kitty (I have 2 black cats so it hit home). :(
