I'm planning a trip to San Diego in early October as a treat to myself and Mac and Princess. The three of us have had a very stressful few months of work. Well, I have and they just get to look cute - and thats stress enough right! Plus I can't wait to take them both to the beach - they will LOVE it.

I'd loooove to stay close to/on the beach and have been going through the list of hotels on petswelcome.com.. Anyone have recommendations on places they have stayed?

Just want to say... HAVE FUN :D! I'm certain y'all have a blast! Unfortunately I can't help ya with pet friendly accomodations because I didn't have a dog when I lived there...

La Jolla (North of San Diego) is a very dog friendly place. There are sidewalk cafes where you can eat outside while your baby sleeps under the table. We have stayed at the Residence Inn, La Jolla, several times and they have a nice grassy pet area you can take your dogs for potty relief (take your plastic bags with you!). But as you have probably discovered, there are many other places in the San Diego area where pets are welcome. You need to let them know in advance when you make the reservations that you will be bringing your babies just to make sure their animals-permitted policies are still in effect. Also, some places do charge extra for animals.

Just to let you know, on many of the beaches down there, dogs are not allowed until late in the afternoon or very early in the AM. We inadvertently made the mistake of taking Scrapper out to the water during the middle of the day and the lifeguards drove over in their jeep and very courteously pointed out the time limitations. (I had accidentally misread the signs.)

It's a beautiful place. Wonderful restaurants, gorgeous beaches. You can have a great time there. We love it.

PS I recommend you travel with crate(s) for your babies so you can leave them in the room if you need to be somewhere doggies can't go.

Thanks so much for this info! La Jolla sounds exactly like what I want. We've travelled with Princess (and crate) before, but this is the first time with both little trouble makers. I definitely want to be at a place where the dogs aren't second rate guests - I'm not snooty, but I HATE HATE HATE that in many places you get stuck at a motel 6 with the outdoor turf carpet. ;)

I'd love to stay at one of the Loews hotels...sounds like they have THE most deluxe pet service...truly a vacation for us all! ;) The way Boxers should be treated!

Loews sounds really great, too! We might try that next time. Coronado is at the other end of San Diego, more southerly. We've always stayed in La Jolla because our daughter attends UCSD and it's right there in La Jolla but if we were all together when school is out, Coronado would be wonderful. Let us know how your trip worked out and the pet-friendly places you visited.

Hi. We have stayed at the Loews on Coronado. We didn't bring our dog though. The hotel itself is great. I'm sure you will have a great time. From your link, it seems the dogs will have a great time too. We travel to the San Diego area at least twice a year. I never would have thought that the Loews would welcome dogs. I'm going to have to remember that. Have fun!

There are three dog beaches where you can let your dogs run off leash. One is in Coronado (Coronado is in the central section of San Diego, across from Downtown SD). The dog beach is as northwest on the island that civilians are permitted (next to the Navy base). It is at the north end of Ocean Blvd and you will see the dogs before you park. Nice people with well-behaved dogs.

The other beach is in Ocean Beach (more north) and is very popular. Not as nice as Coronado dog beach.

And the third one is in Del mar, just north of La Jolla. A small stretch of beach across from the race track. Just south of Via de la Valle.

The street in La Jolla with the shops, galleries, cafes is Prospect Street. It is a very upscale area that you could probably walk your dogs on the sidewalk, but I don't think the nicer cafes will allow dogs.

You can take your dogs on leash on the beach at all city beaches after 6pm (when you are going, it won't get dark til 7 or 7:30). The beaches I listed above are off-leash beaches all day long.

Don't overlook La Jolla Shores, just north of La Jolla, more funky, sidewalk cafes to eat in. That's the area I was referring to in my earlier post.
