My DH boxer he had when we met, Nikki had this. She was diagnosed when she was a pup after she had these strange spells of collapsing and then quickly recovering. She lived to be nine years (almost ten).

Well as you know I'm going through the same thing, Rocky's heart is twice the size that it's supposed to be. His med's do help. They won't stop the disease, but Lily could get another 1 to 2 years. Think of it as the heart is a balloon being blown up till it's about to pop, once the balloon is stretched out of shape it stays out of shape. The same with the heart muscles. I was hoping vigorous exercise would help. But it can only make it worse. With more chances of "fainting" spells (arrithmia's). I was lucky Rocky was at the vet's when he fainted. When Lily is running around free, limit her exercise...watch her tongue make sure it doesn't go blue. I limit rocky's running to about 3-4 times a day for about 10-15 minutes. The rest of the time it's walking. I still let him do the boxer burn (like I could stop him LOL), he'll know when to stop sometimes lol. You'll also find once Lily's on med's she won't be sleeping as much, and Rocky's jump was also that little bit higher.

So sorry to hear the news

It sounds like you have gotten some great advice. Unfortunately, we had the same thing happen with our 4 yr. old. baby Brutus. We found out way too late. It was very difficult because he was totally normal active boxer. One day he got what I and the vet thought was a "cold". It turns out his heart was twice the size it should have been.

We found a wonderful cardiologist. They did put Brutus on many medications, including one from Europe. This did help Brutus to have a somewhat normal ( not so many hikes and reduced play time) and seemingly painless life. Because we found out so late Brutus was not with us for too much longer. It was very difficult for me and my husband. It seemed so wrong that such a vivacious dog could be so sick. We also found it so ironic that a dog that had so much love to give was dying from a sick heart. ( I'm sure your Lily is quite the lover too!)

The cardiologist said that if we would have found out sooner we would have been able to treat him better and hopefully prolong his life more. It sounds like you have that going for you.

Just try to remember the wonderful and happy life you have provided for Lilly and cherish everyday, even if it is years to come. Good luck, try to keep your head up and keep us updated.

Hi! We are new to boxerworld and I just read your post about your beautiful Lily, and wanted to wish you and your baby all the best. Our Tess had 5 cancerous lumps cut off her a year ago this month, and she is still going strong, so I know how devastated you must of been. Keep up the fight, all the best from Down Under.
