Sad for a Boxer!

My aunts friend has a boxer who is 8yrs old. Last night when I got home there was a message on my machine saying that they want to give her away and was wondering if I would be able to take her. They know that Darby is spoiled to death and want someone that knows boxers and will love her to take her. Well of course I asked DH and he said NO WAY! I ask the lady why they want to give her away and this is what she said...They live on the main street in town and she always gets loose. She is afraid that she will get ran over or hit by a car (I can think of a few ways to stop that from happening) and the kids will not help out with her and the husband is on the road and only home every couple of weeks.

So I am just feeling awful for this baby. She is 8 yrs old and they have had her since she was a baby and now they want to up and let her go! Plus they put in the paper "To give away". That means any crazy person could come and get her! I guess I have a question for everyone and please do not take this the wrong way. Would it be better if they put her down then up and change her hole life and have so much stress on her? I am very angry at this lady for doing this and I would love to give her a piece of my mind but I dont know if it would help. So I am asking you guys to help me! What should I tell her when I call her tonite to let her know DH says NO!

Sorry so long winded but I feel just awful for this baby!

....putting a dog down because its inconvenient for the owner to be responsible is not the answer. I would contact a rescue first. If the lady is bound and determined to give the Boxer to the first person who comes a long,I would ask your husband if you could at least foster the poor baby until a proper home can be found....in fact,if I were still married,I'd probably tell my husband we were fostering-LOL.....Paws crossed for the best for this baby.Perhaps you can suggest to the owner she contact a rescue or maybe even her vet...someone in the office may foster.Good luck

I know putting the dog down is not the right thing to do. The right thing is for them to make it work and keep the promise they made to the dog when they got it. I guess I just can not understand people that do this. I made a promise to Darby when I got her to love her and take care of her until the end. I know sometimes in life things change and people have no choise (in their mind) but to give the dog up. but from the reasons she gave my I think they are taking the easy way out! I will contact Green acres boxer rescue today and see what they have to say. I hate to say this but I know DH will not let me foster. This is the one big thing we fight about. I have a big heart and would do anything for any animal and he will not!

I will email Green Acres right now and let you know what happens.

there are many ways for the dog not to get loose and run maybe you can go over some ideas with her im sure shed appreaciate it. the poor dog only knows this family they really need to think about that, no matter how bad things get thats your dog and your responsibility they are just like your kids(at least mine are)

Just FYI, in late December when I was trying to help another Boxer, the rescue organizations in both Wisconsin and Illinois said they were full to the brim and were asking people to hang on to their dogs until they could get back to them. But, maybe there's room now. Those were Green Acres Boxer Rescue (Wisconsin) and Boxer Rebound (Illinois, but works with Wisconsin, too).
I really don't understand how someone could give up an 8 year old dog. That's like giving up a family member you've had for 8 years!!

Would your husband let you take her temporarily? Maybe then you could find a friend who'd take her permanently?

I'd love another one, but my husband isn't up for it yet, either! Max is quite a handful, though! I might be able to provide some temporary help if you find that's necessary. Keep us posted

I just can't believe she wants to get rid of her after 8 years. She is like a member of the family! The kids won't help take care of her? That's terrible!
That poor dog needs a new loving home with someone who will love it and spend some time with it. Poor baby. :(

I'm shocked and not sure what to say...I agree with the others :( how in the world can someone give there baby away after spending eight wonderful years together :confused: I really don't understand that and her kids not helping, how old are her kids anyway?

I think her kids are in grade school. So for sure old enough fo take some responsibility for the dog (I am guessing 7-8 and 12-13 yrs old). The more I think about this lady the more mad I am getting. I just found out also that they sold their house on main street. So my guess is they built a new house and do not want a dog in the house (I could be wrong about the new house but I will find out). I guess thats the good part about being in a small town, you find out a lot of info on people!

Also I emailed Green Acres Boxer rescue and am waiting to hear back.
