Roxy got spayed yesterday and she is acting very weird today. Little history......I made sure her vet did not use Ace. She had her surgery around 8:00 am and I picked her up at 5:30. Before leaving the vet gave her a shot for pain and a bottle of 75mg Rimadyl. She vomited three times when we got home but other than that she was just really out of it. She didn't drink anything but I understand that's normal because of all the fluids that are given during surgery. This morning, I wanted to give her the 1/2 Rimadyl as instructed but she wouldn't eat. The vet told me to see if she would eat chicken and rice. She did then I gave her 1/2 the pill. About 30 minutes later, she poop solid, then it turned runny. Took her back to the vet, she gave her a shot and gave me something to put in her food to settle her tummy. She has had runny poops several times today. That doesn't bother me that much, her very anxious behavior and whining does. She is extremely restless. I don't think it's an emergency so that is why I thought I would ask someone on BW. Is the Rimadyl affecting her this way or is it her reaction to pain. I only gave her 1/2 a pill and the vet told me not to give her anymore. I also want to add, her eyes are like wide open....like sort of crazy looking. Anyway, paranoid is my middle name. Thanks in advance......

Never had a dog react this way after a spay, but I would not have given her Rimadyl, I would have requested something safer like Tramadol just because I have heard too many bad things about Rimadyl. And yes, stomach upset like what you've described is a common side effect of Rimadyl.

Do you know what the shot is that they have given her twice now?? That would help a lot.

Hope she's OK.

No, unfortunately I don't know what type of med was in the shot. Her vet just told me it was for pain and that it would make her drowsy. It seems to have done just the opposite. I gave her her kong toy and that kept her occupied but not for long. Poor thing...she just pacing the floor. Thanks.

I would get her back to the vet ASAP. If the shot was supposed to make her drowsy and she's showing the opposite behavior then that is an adverse reaction. I would NOT give her anymore Rimadyl and call the vet back and get her in ASAP, if they are closed then find the nearest E-vet. Pacing the floor is extremely abnormal behavior for a dog who just had surgery.

I agree with Caney Creek. I would be getting the vet on the phone or going to the e-vet. If your dog is pacing she is at a very high anxiety level, whether it is from pain or a reaction to the drugs. I hope she recovers quickly, keep us posted.

I really appreciate the advice. After I read the first response, (not the one about the ER) I sat on the floor and told Roxy to lay down beside me. She chewed on her bone and eventually fell asleep. The further good news is is she is great today....all the good vibes worked. I don't know what was going on with her but I will be more informed about the meds that she is given. This has been really new experience for us. Our 17 year Chow mix, (soon to be 18 in April, God willing) has never had any issues through the 2 surgeries he has had. He has been so low maintainance. Moving forward, I will be more involved. Thank you, again!!

Glad to hear she's OK. :) Definitely be aware in the future of WHAT exactly your dog is getting, preferably BEFORE she gets it ;) Better safe than sorry!

I'm so glad Roxy if feeling better! When you take her back for a check up I would get a list of the meds they gave her and how much they gave her. I would also make sure they make a note in her chart about her reactions. Then, God forbid, if she would ever need surgery again, you could make sure she won't go through that again. Or even if she would need pain meds again. Continued ((healing vibes)) coming your way!

reaction...

Sugar got spayed yesterday, and she acted the same way. She was completly out of it and i couldn't do anything with her besides take her to poddy. She is on rimadyl also, and she has been on it before because of another health reason. The rimadyl didn't make her act any different before, she acted her self.
Augar has been laying around and wines also, i was very worried last night because she would wine in her sleep. My boyfriend told me i was over reacting, that she just got cut open. So today she is alot better although you can tell she is still in pain.
So no, the rimadyl shouldn't do that to her, it should just be her reaction to pain.

Not true. The list of side effects for Rimadyl is endless, and it includes vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, and behavior changes. Just because your dog was given Rimadyl in the past and had no reaction, that does not mean that Rimadyl could not have caused her odd behavior the second time it was prescribed... because it very well could have. The health risk associated with NSAIDs is liver toxicity -- some dogs are more sensitive than others, but no matter what, it makes sense to say that the more it is used, the greater the risk of liver problems.

Also wanted to add that, when my dog was spayed she was given NO pain medications to go home with, and yet she displayed NO worrisome behavior -- no pacing, no whining, nothing. Not a peep from her all night. She just slept it off and was fine the next day.

DSmitty -- I'm still curious to know what that shot was that the vet gave Roxy... please do let us know when you find out :)
